I'm going to state my OPINION here.

My opinion is that most discussions about contracts generate more heat than light.

At the end of the day, if you sign ANY contract, however "airtight", with a snake in China, you are going to get bit and there is little you can do about it.

You need to do the same thing businesses do before pouring millions of dollars into a China Joint Venture - and that is called "due diligence".

How do you do it? Try these:

1. Demand email addresses of current and former employees. Use them.

2. The single best indicator of how your employer is going to treat you, in my opinion, is the housing provided. Inspect your living quarters before signing a contract in China.

3. Ask on Internet forums (such as this about) the school.

My opinion: Its about character, not contracts.

Minor adenda to KES's wise advice:-

Quote:

Ask the school how long their longest serving foreign teacher worked at the school and ask for his/her e-mail address in addition to those of both former and current teachers.

For those seeking to secure a position before coming to China, ask the school for photographs of the accommodation; every room.

Exactly! The best contract in the world will be problematic (subject to doubt or debate) if it's not backed by goodwill (friendly hope that something will succeed).
