I've known English people whose language bears only the slightest resemblance to English...............innit?

Quite true. Yet any government job you want to apply for requires at least a 'B' level of French proficiency. I wish my French was better. It's been so long since I've been any good; now when I try speaking, I inevitably end up speaking half-French, half-Turkish.

Thus it's better that I don't. Speak French, that is!

Don't alot of the language schools offer you free lessons in the other languages they teach? Do many people pick up Turkish that way? I really want to learn Italian or German actually.

Uhm...I have not heard of a school in Istanbul that does that yet. Perhaps I'm mistaken, and other posters will contradict me. Most "reputable" schools don't even offer Turkish lessons anymore!

That is true of ET, Interlang, and Gokdil. However, teachers there can get a discount at Dogu Dilleri for Turkish lessons. I think it is a good idea to take lessons at least to get some basics. Then it becomes a case of what kind of language learner you are as to how to keep learning. I think the process of feeling stupid or childlike from not knowing a language gives us much more sympathy for our students Smile

I got free lessons at EF Suadiye last year (though by that time the beginner class offered was too low for me and the intermediate I ended up taking was taught by the worlds most boring grammar drone ) and again this year at Bilgi (which I wanted to take but the timetable conflicted with mine).

The question 'Do you know Turkish' seems to parallel neatly the English language learner's usual sorrowful cry of 'How long will it take me to learn English?' or other classic: 'Can I learn English in 2 seconds...er...years?'

I mean, don't harass the asker for not knowing the banality of their question, but show them another way of thinking
