It has still increased slightly month over month. I doubt many places will accomodate the essential salary increases. |

Considering what you probably went through in elementary school with the name "Chester," you can imagine what I went through with the first name "Chancellor." |

Inflation is dipping year over year, but it still increased .05% month over month. Has anyone had pay increases? |

When I first went to Indonesia, the exchange rate was about Rp400 = US$1. It remained there for several years before it started climbing a bit in the late 1970s. When I now pay several thousand rupiah to eat a meal, I still get a bit nostalgic for the good-old days of smaller banknotes and the 1-rupiah coin. |

Err, yes. In hard currency terms anyway. My salary is now worth about 15% more in pounds sterling than it was a year ago. Doesn't help much buying groceries in Carrefour but it goes a lot further when paying my NI contributions back home.
Something I can't help noticing - when the rupiah nosedived last year the price of many imported food and drink items rose as a consequence. I have yet to see any price cuts even though the USD exchange rate is now 8770. Strange. |

Henery Cowell comments on the days when people used small notes.
I had some difficulties getting my students to understand that the rupiah is in fact based on the decimal system, onlynowadays the 'standard' is 1000 instead of 100.
To make my point, I told them that the rupiah was originally made up of 100sen to 1 rupiah. Not one of these kids had heard of this, so I went to a money changer, who had a wad of mint condition Sen notes, and he donated me a few which I photocopied and gave to the students; they were quite intrigued.
NB: as a mind-bending activity for older students, see how many can complete the cost of a simple shopping list in dollars and cents, and come up with an accurate total. They work in 1000s and 10 thousands with no problem, but 10s and 100s as in cents and dollars, can really floor them.
Good practice for counting numbers in English. |

You'll notice the same for many prices, such as bus fares. From the beginning of the fuel price hikes to the last big hike, fares on your standard Jakarta junkers have tripled while the combined fuel price increase was less than 150%. A lot of people are using others' ignorance on these matters to double their profit margins, another example being on imported items as you mentioned.
Also, the rupiah is expected to level off next week around 8,900. |

I've often wondered how bus and taxi operators worked out they need to increase their fares by say 20% when fuel goes up 20%.
My conclusion is that maybe fuel is the only expendable. Don't tell me that anything is spent on repairs or upgrades or better seating. or dare I say it, meters in taxis that don't become rusak the moment a white customer is sighted. |

Reminds me of the time back in the UK when, for some reason I forget, the price of potatoes rocketed. The price of fish & chips went up around 50%: the rpice of potatoes came down to regular levels but the price of chips stayed the same. Now, that really annoys me. |

It is within the nature of capitalism for prices to rise to levels that the marketplace will bear. As long as people are willing to pay the higher prices, the prices will continue to climb higher - and not just in Indonesia. |

Increase fuel prices to the point where these stupid clowns can't afford to put fuel in their bikes: maybe this will make the roads cleaner and safer. |
