This isn't entirely fair. Actually most students seem to somehow occupy at least 18 hours of day of their lives (apparently with something other than studying). Most of my students have a "part-time" job which of course can entail up to a full 40 hours of work per week. Then, because of the way Japanese universities are structured they actually have 15-19 different classes per week. It works out to the same number of hours an American student might have in one week but with 15-19 different teachers. Then there are an endless number of the pointless time-eaters that occupy Japanese everywhere including dorm meetings, department student society meetings, meetings for every freakin' thing on earth.
I do understand that most students are completely ground down by it all and that their whole survival strategy is just to cruise on everything. It's just same old things as in another thread about how unproductive Japanese employees are despite the insane hours they put in. I understand. But it doesn't make it any less frustrating for the teacher. |
