Subjective .. yes ... but subjective opinion based at best on non-sense ... at worst on racism ...

yes the waterfront area is nicer, and yes it's for tourists and ships/boats as they approach.

and because turks generally dont take much care of their streets, environment, etc.

i dont think i need to be abused for my thoughts, thanks very much!!! the original post said, what is the ugliest city youve ever lived in'? Im sorry that you have obviously lived in many ugly cities that you think istanbul is nice. for me, istanbul is the ugliest. so my reply stands. it's a subjective post, if you dont like the replies, perhaps you shouldnt partake???

I think the point is that your thoughts are that 'turks' are dirty people who live in ramshackle houses and couldn't give a hoot about their enviornment, and my thoughts (and apparently the thoughts of someone else on this board) are that you are an a.rse.

If you don't like this reply, please don't partake in the conversation.

Maybe I should clarify, too. I never meant to imply that the "Turks" themsleves are dirty or backwards or anything like that, but I do think that away from the famous scenic areas, or various gated "sites", that Istanbul is, in a visual sense, ugly. The houses age quicky, people (in my area, anyway) have a favourite corner they throw their trash out at, and it sits there.... until.... either once a week the trash truck or the gypsies come.... paint is peeling off buildings, buildings have wierd floorplans that have windows facing your nieghbors cement wall....

Inside Turkish homes, there is some outrageous level of cleanliness, which often includes washing by hand (not mop, no good) the entire apt. floor at least once a week (many housewives recommend 3 times a week, to make sure the dust doesn't collect), washing the curtains, inside the cupbard shelves (otherwise the lace dollie decorations might start to apear grimy and un-bleached...).....washing washing washing, and everything has a special place so it apears "just so"

Outside, I think Istanbul is a dump. People spend all thier energy cleaning the small area they have some control over, home, and then leave the street to the dogs.

I don't think that you did imply such a thing,; my comment were directed at someone else's post.

You're right to a certain extent, although there are also some very beautiful places in Istanbul which are simply tourists sites.

eg. I don't think the Bosphorus was built for the tourists.

Generally a lot of remarks about the Turks are true ,the houses are usually immaculate inside as the lady of the house cleans and dusts and washes on a daily basis .However outside their homes it looks like a rubbish tip with the bins overflowing ,graffiti everywhere ,kids kicking balls against cars and windows ,general mayhem etc that adds to a feeling of "ugliness" .Most Turkish cities are in need of a good sorting out and the citizens should be a lot more concerned and responsible about environmental pollution .

I lived in Dubai for 18 years so I can safely say that Dubai is also trying to ' get on it's feet.' There are no major problems in Dubai other than the traffic and the huge amount of hookers but then it's the same anywhere else. They are building a new train system to deal with the demand and a new bridge is going up over the creek. What are the municipality of Istanbul doing to clean up the city? Sod all. Wait until you see the Dubai skyline in five years time. There will be nothing like it. And the reason there is so much construction is due to the property boom. My mate bought a property in the Greens on Sheikh Zayed Rd six years ago for 750 000 dirhams. He recently sold the same property for 3.5 million dirhams.

Yes Dubai does have it's faults as does any city but Dubai and Istanbul are NOT comparable.[/quote]

I forgot to mention Liverpool as well, which aside from having spawned the greatest football team and band ever, is a shit hole.

A beautiful one, mind.

you mean like 10 dollars a beer? Like the new avatar HMAF.

Last night as i was watching the football I heard this almighty roar. It sounded like a generator big enough to power the whole of Bkirkoy. It wasn't . It was a water lorry with a huge power hose on it cleaning the streets. Is this common in other areas or is Sisli belediye leading the way.
.
.
.
.
Of course, we are in Turkey. This was around 11 o'clock last night and my dustmen usually come around 9 or 10 in the evening, however, last night they didn't so the streets were filled with crap lying all over the place, clean crap mind you. coupled with the noise of the car alarms that the power hose set off. I gather from the bakal it wasn't very popular

Well bully for your 'mate' ... he was fortunate enough to get right in at the start ... I'm sure the current property owner will not experience the same 500% return on capital ... and much of that property was built by whom exactly ... under what conditions ... even the local press have been on the case of property developers etc for their reckless exploitataion of cheap labour ... they've even had a riot ! ... the situation is now such that recruiters are having to go deeper and deeper into rural India to find people desperate enough to do it ... or isn't that a major problem in your eyes ...

As for keeping the streets clean in Dubai, a city of around 1 million ... there are armies of cheap workers dressed in bright orange overalls out with their litter picking sticks in 40C temperatures ... at least 50 people die every summer from heat exhaustion while being forced to work outside ... a law was introduced attempting to curtail this between the hours of 1 and 4 ... but what do you think happens ... and go to any wadi out of reach of this army and you'll find nothing but cr.ap everywhere ... I've witnessed familes simply pull the blanket from beneath their picnic and leave the whole shabang on the floor ... and people blame the government for not sending people out to clean it up ! .. mafi mushkule !!

What's the Istanbul municipality doing to clean up its city of 15 million ... well some examples were cited above but you must have missed them ... and if you're in Istanbul I'd have thought you'd be aware of other projects going on ... for development, their building a tunnel under the Bosphorous, extending the metro, upgrading sewage treatment sytems around the city ... and building a third bridge spanning the Bosphorous ... three of these are some of the most ambitious and exciting projects in their fields of engineering today ...

If you don't appreciate the steps being taken and fail to understand that these steps lead to an increase in expectations and standards then I can see why you think nothing is going on .... unless it colonises Mars and enslaves a million martians, Istanbul doesn't have the cash to employ an army of people to clean up its mess overnight ...

That was a really good point you raised. My family live in Emirates Lakes and I'm always amazed to see the amount of workers in that neighborhood doing bugger all. When I go for a swim I am constantly trying to step over half dead Indians who have fallen unconscious (due to the heat or laziness you decide). But then the point remains, if they are being so mercilessly exploited then why do they continue to go there? Would they be better off in Lahore or some other godforsaken hellhole? I don't think so.......don't feel sorry for them and don't trust any of them. Let them know their place.....washing our cars.

Rangers for the UEFA cup.

WOW - Confused Shocked THIS HAS GOT TO BE JOKE. YOU MUST BE TAKING THE P*SS right. Forget the my di*ck is longer than yours about Istanbul and Dubai. There's no way anyone can agree to near slave labour conditions in Dubai. Just because a man is poor and has no choice does not give so called good men of the faith the right to use them like slaves.... Mad

As for Istanbul being dirty or not. Well yea it is dirty as is every other major city in the world. None of the worlds Mege cities can be defined as nice clean little places. I think for city well over 15 millon, the local gov't does a fair job of keeping the place clean.

Btw the Asain side is always clean.
