Teachers can improve their skills in many ways: degrees (of all types), certificates, research, classroom observation, reading, practice, joining teacher groups, attending conferences and workshops. All of these contribute to "professional development".

Good point... but also in China there does not seem to be much offered in terms of teacher development. I have asked another FT to sit in on my class, and I was given a few constructive comments, but that is hardly enough.

It's pretty simple in my opinion, math and science are fields which lead to degrees. Show me a student who has a degree in ESL. I'll show you plenty of MA TESOL degrees but no such thing as an ESL degree.

Ah, but I am teaching English major students and they will be getting an English degree. But I do see you point. My job is essentially teaching students a tool that will help them pursue other career plans. I also question my ability to teach English majors as I do not know much about English literature.

If you want to be given the respect of a professor in China try applying here: http://www.sais-jhu.edu/Nanjing/ I think this is what you're looking for. If the job you have doesn't give you the respect you deserve then leave.

School looks good. I would not be qualified to teach there. They are not looking for English teachers.

Yu feels as a whole FT's have a low status. All I really want to say on this one is that there are positions out there that offer what you are looking for. Do what you are qualified to do and you'll be happy. If you feel you are over-qualified and under appreciated change jobs.

Actually I really like my current job. No real problems with it other than trying to teach English majors how to write thesis papers based on literature. I was never interested in that topic, so I dont really know what the students are talking about and if what they are talking about is correct. In short, I probably help them enough, but I wish I could do more.

I do feel that on a whole from reading posts here that FTs do not have a high status. Or that FTs feel they should get more money. Or they are not appreciated. Many threads are spent discussing about pay. My question is how to raise the status of FTs in general. My impression is that there are actually not so many people dissatisfied with their current status. I am more concerned with what I will do after I go back.

In Time, thanks for the journal link.

Hi Yu, I think I can understand your point. Many people teach in Korea illegally. Apparently, the year after I left there was a major crackdown. From what I understand about 50 Canadian teachers were arrested. When I returned to Canada from China I had only read about the incident on this board. I believe the Canadian media must have picked up the story. When I told my Canadian students I taught in Korea, two different students thought I was doing it illegally because they read about it in the newspaper. I guess what I am trying to say is that there are some completely unprofessional people who tarnish all of our images.
