Cutting-edge modern metropoli with lots of visual art, literary art, performing art, culinary art, distilling art...beautiful ladies....windswept coastlines, broad and clean strands, lots of great streams and rivers for fishing, lakes for boating... isolated countryside with rocky hills to climb and quiet meadows to sleep in... immense historical sites...

yes - there are problems....but this is a fantasy thread, is it not? Wink

Ideally - That is, if I have the money or income to support doing this, and we agree that the place doesn't change, of course - I'd have to pick Puerto Vallarta, Mexico.

Now, if everything else were real life - things change over time and so on - I'd have to pick Shenyang, China. My wife is from there, her family is pretty cool, and that's where we own a home. We'd have a business (catering? English school? Musical instrument shop?), raise a family and grow old happily.
I would NOT pick my own country. I have no home there, and my family has been shirty, to say the least, with my wife. I'm not going to turn in my passport or anything because it's convenient, but I have no use for the United States of America.

Don't know how they came to the decision or even how I was able to swing it but I was just approved for permanent residency here in New Zealand. I mean I'm just a crappy ol' TESOL teacher and I'm 49 years old for crying out loud.
So I reckon I'm going to stay here on the South Island for a spell. I don't know if I'd want to stay here forever, but it's alright with me for now. I definitely have no desire whatsoever to ever return to the USA. What a graveyard that is.

I would say Turkey. because so far it hasn't been all that hypothetical. I came here about 16 years ago, having never traveled abroad before. Back then it was far different and much harder to be comfortable but I had this feeling I had come home.

One of the things I noted was that if I had had God-like powers and I was intent on creating a world of my own, Turkey, for better or worse, is probably what I would have wound up with.
Generally attractive but usually unaffected people, historic land, a moderate climate with a lot of sunny days and an interesting culture that isn't so very different than what I was used to. The pace of life was slower and most of the people would rather have a good time than worry about career advancement. I would have, in my God mode, no doubt have forgotten some minor details and similiarly, Turkey has lots of irritating and exasperating imperfections.

Like Freddy, I arrived in a foreign land 17 summers ago.
Raising a family and bought a home but dream of having
a guest-house in another country, don't know where.
Definitely not the States...never know though!

At the very least, I know that Canada is not a long term option....the weather is too friggin cold for most of the year ...it's why I left in the first place.

Actually, the very notion of a place that you can never leave gives me the hee-bee-jee-bees!!! I guess if you're a criminal, it could be like that?

If you could live anywhere in Scotland, where would you choose to be? I ask b/c I'm thinking of making a move up there (want to visit first and have a look around). At the moment, I'm living in Madrid and am able to work just about anywhere (as long as I have a computer and an Internet connection).
