Yes, the average jane or joe CAN earn that money.
But for how long? And at what cost?
And is it legal? Or are 'visa regulations not important' like Middy stated and you can be reported, fined, your significant other jailed, and you deported if the complaint is "strong" enough.
And is this being used by some recruiters? |

VDKT I am sorry if I spelt your name wrong but you mentioned skittles I have some promotional packages of skittles on my desk with this cute little container that you can put them in. I am going to use them for prizes tomorrow in class.
I am paid by the hour, I have a housing allowance of 1000RMB a month and I am driven to classes.
I think I have it good. I also have private classes at my home that pay more I have told my boss about this and I don't think he is happy but he wears it. I give him my 30 hours a week. I am not happy teaching high school and kindergarden for 120 an hour, more energy more planning, wrong end of the stick, the classes should be paid more than the adult classes. |

Lastly, Jammish made a comment about HKD 150,000 being the same as 100,000 UK pounds. One HK dollar is not much different than one Chinese RMB. A hundred thousand pounds would be well over a million HKD or RMB.
. |
Ah, apologies. I meant that 150,000 a month, worked out to over 100,000 pounds a year. It got confused because in the UK we usually refer to salaries annually, but in China monthly. |

Before I begin let me clarify one thing; I am NOT trying to cause unrest, be sarcastic or flippant, but I DO have a question:
How do you find one of these jobs that pays 8 - 10,000 RMB per month with fully inclusive accomodations and full return ticket while only teaching 16 - 20 hours per week? Are we talking about oral English or something more 'involved'?
I rarely see them advertised on Dave's or anywhere else for that matter so how do you find them? Are there some sites or links that you guys can share with the rest of us or are they closely guarded secrets?
Obviously I understand that you have to be qualified and or have relevant experience to get these positions; I have a B.A, 200 hour Tesol certificate and almost two years practical experience teaching in China.
I figure an application and resume can't hurt.
Thanks in advance. |

I think there might be the occasional job where you work a minimum of hours and get a maximum of pay, but my guess is that the higher the salary, the more hours/responsibilities you have . . . .IN GENERAL.
My 10K a month job contracts me out at 25 contact hours (20 teaching periods each week - 40 minutes each), but I end up working up to 40 hrs. when it comes to paperwork, grading, lesson prep, supervising the kids, etc.
The job is relatively easy, yet sometimes frustrating with 25, uhm, energetic kids! |

Basically 'standard' ESL jobs (i.e. not teaching Academic english, not at an International school, or whatever) paying 10,000 and over for a relatively small number of hours (15-20) are easier to find when you 'know the right people'...
It should be stressed that this is true for the Chinese as well. Guanxi is unbelievably important here... |

OK, so that being said; teaching up to 20 classes (45 mins each) per week with full airfare reimbursement and fully subsidized accomodations with two months off per year for 4500 - 6500 RMB per month (dependant on location) probably is something of the norm?
From my contact with other FT's it certainly seems to be.
I guess there's always a trade off between salary and responsibility no matter where you are.
It just depends on how hard you want to work I suppose. |

Guanxi is a lot more than knowing the right people. It's a lot more than meeting someone at a social event and giving a business card. It's a complex relationship of trust and most importantly, face.
Of course knowing the right people helps and finding a job like yamahuh describes is going to be found through personal contacts, not on a website. They are not advertised for a variety of reasons, mostly because it isn't necessary as the position is filled easily through contacts and finding a responsible, professional, experienced teachers who is skilled and who the students like with good references is usually done outside the internet for the high salary jobs. Word of an exeptional teacher gets around different schools in the city pretty quick.

Amanda, yes! if you are a great teacher word can spread quick!
But it really depends where you are.
If you are in an "underpopulated" EFL area like Nanjing, Anhui or Pudong then word can spread.
But if you are in Shanghai or Beijing then there are likely lots of tall, pretty foreign teachers that can teach or at least look good enough to give 'face' to the Chinese person showing you off. Supply and demand is key in a market with few rules.
Pudong might be a good place for this type of thing. I've heard that right now there aren't many good EFL teachers and even the mediocre ones can earn there.
I hope the floodgates open.
Hey, bearcanada..can you answer those simple questions?? Thanks! |

Note to prof: I have no need to present my credentials to you. Perhaps you would like to start by presenting your own credentials to all the people on this board.
I have brought your posts to the attention of the moderator and asked that they shut you down. We're here to share information, not bait from juveniles.

I'm still waiting for a little information about your recruitment company.
I mean, hey, this is a forum full of EFL teachers. We like to discuss things about teaching and the EFL business.
So why don't you tell us about your company and we can decide whether or not to use your services?
Sounds fair? Right? |

This year I received 12,000 for twelve teaching periods but only paid for 8 months due to 4 months vacation.
Next year I will receive 10,000 for 12 teaching periods but paid all 12 months still with 4 months vacation. |

Yes, no vacation pay.
So what do they expect teachers to do for those 4 months? Busk??? Stand at the darkly lit street corner of a Pudong avenue? |
