Let's get back to the cost. If it's really 300,000 as I've heard then a drivers license is basically a non issue for me-I'll stick with the bike

It is if you don't have an existing license. Otherwise get down to you local branch of roads etc and change your lisence. I'm pretty sure Americans are among the few that actually have to take a driving test which costs? I don't know, probably 10,000 or under.

The cost to Americans is just under 3000 yen--each time.

Sweetsee, are you saying it cost you 3000 yen six times?

Wow Canadians don't have to take the test?? But we drive on the opposite side of the road!! I hear that it costs approx 300,000 yen to get your drivers license. Is this true if you want to simply carry over from your Canadian license? Also, I have no interest in driving a car but I would love to get one of those little scooters that everyone drives around-do you need a special kind of license for that?

This is a fairly widespread misconception, but I believe it's nothing to do with what side of the road other countries drive on, more with whether or not an agreement has been reached between the relevant authorities of each country in which they've recognised each others standards and practices. I've heard this is also the reason for Americans having to take the test.

In the EU, only Britain and Ireland drive on the left, yet all the other countries' citizens can get the J licence without a test, as can Koreans, Canadians, Russians and lots of others who drive on the right.

Provided you have the correct paperwork and can jump through some relatively simple bureaucratic hoops, it'd cost you probably less than Y10,000 all in.

I also know a few people who don't drive but got their J licence partly on the off-chance they might drive sometime, but also largely because they prefer to use it as ID rather than their gaijin card. That's not why I got mine, but I do also use it as the 1st form of ID I use. After all, if I'm just collecting a parcel from the post office or something, my sponsor's name and address, visa status, date of landing etc is none of their goddamn business.

That's what I'm saying Canuck, depending on where you go of course.
Also, if you go in the morning you will be there all day.
Save some money by attending the Saturday 1-hour training lecture, which I will be attending before my next shot.
Think about it, J-folks pay 300,000 and we want it for 3000, doesn't happen.
I was there on Tuesday and no one in the group of over 20 passed, most I believe were first timers.
But like Ironopolis said, I believe, every country has a different agreement.

I think there should be a limit on the number of times you can take your test. I don't think I would want to be on the same road as a person who took ten attempts to pass. They should just be considered "Incompetent behind the wheel".

In any normal country I may be inclined to agree, except failing ten times in Japan means absolutely nothing, and has no bearing on the quality of the driver.

If you're going to do your motorcycle test (without going to driving school) the average number of times you fail before they give it to you IS about 8 to 10. For the car driving test, results may vary, but I've known people who have done it on the first try, and others who have re-taken it many times.

It's a strange system in this country...

Except I have one.

Got my English driver's license first time out.

Apart from that your post was completely accurate.
