When I first arrived in Japan via the JET Program, I was a bit surprised at what the students were allowed to do in class. It might as well have been a beauty school, as so many of them spent the classes putting on make-up, styling their hair, doing their nails, etc...

The girls were just as bad. Wink

I saw a great poster in a subway in Tokyo recently, it said, 'Please do it at home' with a picture of a woman sitting on a train, curling her eyelashes. - All I can say is, "It is so about time for this !" Very Happy Rolling Eyes

A funny story....?

I actually posted this on daves about 9 or 10 years ago! Back then I had no probs saying the company name, but nowadays I'm not so hot-headed and won't, even though I have long left Japan...

Well, it all starts with the fact that I have no real teeth. I have bridges and crowns...my original teeth were knocked out in a road accident when I was 18.

One day, 30 minutes before a class in Tokyo, at a well-known school, I went off to McDonalds over the road and grabbed a quick Big Mac....HELP! My main bridge of teeth came out and in-grained itself into the said burger!!!!!

I went crawling sheepishly back to school and showed the missing teeth to the Japanese centre/school manager who said 'goto dentist!' I mumbled or sign-languaged that it really was a great idea, and asked her where to find one....'Don't know. Anyway, you can't go now, you have to teach'.

So, despite all efforts I was escorted into a classroom of bemused buisnessmen and housewives...it was during that lesson that I discovered one inescapable truth.......

I didn't need to speak! Did the whole lesson with gestures.

When I finally got my teeth stuck back in, I continued to teach without uttering a single word....no-one ever caught wind of it, probably cause it made me the best teacher in Asia. (And who ever noticed great teachers in TEFL?)

But I love the girls curling their eyelashes and putting on mascara! Same with the girls in Wendy's flat ironing and curling their hair.

How about girls spraying on deordorant?

I have had this happen in the classroom a few times. I have suggested to the practioners that they do it in the bathroom, but all I have received in reply is a "I'm sorry"and a repeat of said action the next week.

Saw a High School girl actually clipping the ends of her hais with scissors in the morning rush hour express and THEN she went on to spray whatever it is they spray; wax or mousse or whatever kind of hairspray they use.

Saw the same spraying in the train recently. I was choking up a little for lack of fresh air and the smell of her hair spray.

It is amazing what these girls do.

Then there is the curling irons mentioned before. I see them alot even on the trains, in cafes in restaurants.

Depends on the place where you teach. At some places this would lead to a lot of complaints and a quick termination. I suppose you could replace your voice with yourself on tape, ipod etc..and then playing it for the class or using various EFL CDs , etc.

I taught a class last Monday using the board and gestures as my throat infection made using my voice impossible. Of course you can do it, and cutting down on teacher talk is often laudable, but completely cutting it out in Japan on a regular basis is not an option.

I've seen some nose picking on the train. Imagine that.

Another time I saw a high school girl with a really short skirt sitting on the train across from me.

Ummm...nevermind.

Pulled off from a light on my scooter the other day and was hit/nudged by some kook in a big beamer. I was shocked and imagined my bike to be thrashed, but looked down and seemed to have all of my parts and pulled over. The hot-head pulls up and I suggest pulling off the road. He and his mate get out spewing something about where's my license and my first though was that they were undercover. He starts saying something about money when I said YOU hit me. At this, he whips out his cell and says he's calling the police. Why I have no idea. Duh.

He might have been offering you money, which is done here sometimes, especially for small fender benders where neither party wants to get the police or insurance companies involved.

If he was asking you for money, then I have no clue either Cool .

Saw my first high speed chase this week ( not involving bikes) . well it wasn't that high speed but the driver wasn't letting up, weaving through the small streets. As people stood aghast, I stood a little surprised but not very at a medium to slow speed chase.

Guy wants me to pay for a new bumper cover for his beamer. Right.
Now I have to get an estimate on the damage/smudge mark he put on my drive-chain cover and kick-start lever.
Scary out there!

Took off from a light the other day next to another bike. He was dusting me with his hand in his jacket pocket and legs splayed. We hit traffic doing fifty. I took the right-turn lane and he went between traffic. I caught a flash of him hung up somehow and ducked in front of a car to look back and see him and another bloke picking their bikes up from between two cars. Duh. Summer brings 'em out.

Be safe,

I once saw a middle-aged salaryman cleaning his ears with a toothpick on the subway. It wasn't too disgusting until he nabbed a great big wad of gooey earwax which he proceeded to sprinkle over the floor of the train. The only word to describe my physical reaction was revulsion, pure revulsion.
