| As I said, vidkddkdkdkdkd, it's about finding restaurants that suit you. The best ones are basic but clean, and they generally cook the food in front of you, so you know it's going to be OK. |
ohhh I see jammmmish since hygiene laws seem to be rarely enforced here, you must also go and buy that food with cook - check the sell by date - inspect the storage facilities - take the cook out to wash his hands - insure that veggies and meat aren't chopped up on the same board dive around in that murky soup where they wash the eating utensils while nosing around for all those tummy injuring microbes etc etc - what a safe life you lead. As for the rest of us - I'm sure, although we enjoy our local nosh - we try to have more objective and realistic viewpoints about the quality of local restaurants - and after a period of time, may even start to be a bit more selective, and indeed discover the virtues of cooking at home, and the psychological benefits of, now and again, being able to swoop the chinky (back home I actually used to enjoy a number 12 with prawn fried rice after a session on the BB) with some nice western food all mixed up with its preservatives and added colours. Chinese food, in its native land, is sometimes not as romantic a notion as some of our posters will lead us to believe - and for certain people (not me - but I've met 'em) a major gripe |

Hey S -WOLF - are you talking too me? Dont know what uomo means (probably first or number one) but I was asking about living on 4500 RMB don't know where "nursing my wounds" came in to the picture (and so you know I've lived in multiple places, probably more than you) in America and Europe just not Asia... and if you can read I wrote - That I was only curious how much property goes for in China - if you had asked I would have told you that I'm a 33 year old real estate broker (and burned out after 12 years in the Boston area) but I still and always will invest in real estate. I'm not stupid enough to think that RMB 4500 is enough to buy property (that's why I've worked my ass off for the last 12 years so I can afford to live and invest wherever I please... (Hell, I have property in Massachusetts thats probably worth more than the province you live in) - If Im wrong and you werent being flip too me... than I apologize (I probably had one drink too many and Ill buy you one if I ever end up in China) if you are, my name is Marrsy and do me a favor... disregard my posts in the future I can live with out your opinion And again I apologize if I took it the wrong way Jam thanks for your answers take care and good luck
"Hey uomo - whadd'ye looking for that you can't find back home? I thought you wanted to live away from home for a while, nurse your wounds and get a kind of world view in place of a home view. If you are not sure whether Korea is your ideal home-away-from-home then immerse yourself in some introduction to that country, and if CHina is attracting you you must have read enough about the place to come to your own conclusion. If there is no strong pull in one way or the other you will waver here all the time even as you hold down a job!
Now you want to invest money in an Asian country? A bit rash if I may give you my opinion!" |

Apologies accepted, marssy, for taking everything the wrong way. And 'uomo' isn't English just as 'milliard' only was a loanword the Ukanians used (I suppose when their entity was referred to as 'GB'). 'Uomo' is Italian meaning 'man' if you don't mind. No insult intended, really, even if I questioned your intentions for coming to China.
Forgive me for not knowing where "Massachusetts" is - not a member of the UNO, is it? Sounds like an alright place to me the way you described it - at least for home buyers. I tried to steer you from grief, though; you can buy properties here but you cannot dispose of them easily enough if you must or need to. Still, China is probably Asia's only country where foreign ownership of residential properties is legally possible. It's a bit risky, though. |

What an idiotic statement.
No you don't. You are attempting to become an immigrant to China like all those "Mexicans" to the US.
In fact, China owns so many US bonds that China is helping keep the US afloat.
And a city like Shanghai is packed with Americans looking for work and opportunities.
Leave your ignorant 'patriotic pride' at home.
You've got a lot to learn. But it's to be expected for an adult male with a Rupert Murdoch owned (his wife is from China, y'know) "myspace" site. |

Prof, I think the part about "worth more than the province you live in" was an exaggeration. No one that works in real estate would really believe that. To be more specific for those interested, a family of four in the Boston area would have a lot of trouble finding a house in a nice Boston suburb for less than $500k, and many choose to pay over $800k for the house they want.
And although I suppose it may be accurate to say that China "keeps the US afloat", the US also keeps China afloat by buying manufactured goods. If China wanted to cut off funding for the US trade and budget deficits, they would be hurting themselves as interest rates would spike and consumption of Chinese imports would decline. Also, the value of the dollar, and consequently the value of the bonds the Chinese already hold, would fall precipitously. I would describe the situation as something close to economic MAD (mutually assured destruction). Both sides have an incentive to keep things going in the short-term, but if the unbalance is to be undone it must be done skillfully to avoid damage to both economies.
Anyway, what do you think it takes for an American to make it in Shanghai? In your opinion, is it at all a viable strategy? Would a different city have better opportunities? |

Wolf - Massachusetts is a state in the U.S. And I owe you a drink - Prof I agree, China could bankrupt America anytime, not that it would make sense to do so And I care about Rupert Murdock and his fourth wife becauseOh yeah, they immigrated to the U.S. like all those Mexicans. Thanks for pointing out that having pride is ignorant sounds like you may have some self esteem issues. |

LOL Marssy, thanks a lot for your support, it's nice to get some. I don't know that there's much you can do from the good old USA though.
I think things will work out well.
I'll PM you, too many naysayers who would just pick apart anything I say in public. Thanks again for the support, though now that you have spoken up for me, you've made quite a few enemies amoung the oldies here, who in the past I spoke out against a bit too much in the past.
I'll PM ya, thanks again. |
