No offence ladies and gents: you can't pluck a judgment out of thin air if you're not a Muslim and haven't spent a rather long time studying the texts IN ARABIC and deriving the rulings from them. Very few people are qualified to do that. People who frequent forums, such as the esteemed Dave's, are certainly not qualified for it.

Well, Amen to that. Thank you gb. Not sure it will hush the 'cognoscenti' but you will have tried

this statement from the mufti of Marseilles is pretty clear:

In the first place, you've lowered the bar somewhat by quoting the "mufti of Marseilles' when previously you referred to 'the gran mufti of France'. You've simply looked in the footnotes for an 'authority' who supports your argument and have quoted it as though it were the be all and end all. Secondly, the quote is not at all clear. What is meant by the 'veil', for example? In the Gulf the word generally refers to a face cover, but elsewhere it can mean a head cover.

Any chance of an official quote from that well known authority, the Saudi government, saying that Muslim women need not cover their hair?

Quote:
I have known large numbers of Muslims who will argue all day that there is NO necessity to cover a woman's hair.

Obviously there are many Muslims who believe this. However, I definately believe it is the case that the majority of devout Muslims do believe that women should cover their hair, even if they themselves may flout the rule. I also don't think the issue is particularly controversial among Muslim scholars.

The gentleman is referred to in some places as the Grand mufti of France, in others as the Grand mufti of Marseilles, and in others as the mufti of Marseilles.

The point I am making is the same as that made by Veiled. There is dispute amongst scholars. I have no intention of entering into the dispute, I am merely stating that it exists.

Sometimes one thinks that Muslims should spend more time talking and listening to each other rather than trying to convince non-Muslims who have spent 17+ years living in, traveling in, and studying about that part of the world that they didn't see, hear, and read what they did.

Amazing to think that a Muslim could declare that there is no disagreement about the acceptability of various Hadith... actually I find it sad. But fortunately there are many scholars who are doing just that.
