| Can't get married to Cleo. My wife won't let me. I am not into bigamy anyway. |

Let me confirm, for the record, that Scot and I are not in fact married. FYI.

Well, I'm no spring chicken anymore. And I would also say that my b****iness has been pretty stable over the year. That said, this characteristic has matured and developed with time - after all, I did start on this path in life pretty young. |

But Scot... as long as you are in Saudi, it wouldn't be bigamy.

Of course, for the record, the honourable Scot47, did confirm that, he cant get married to Cleo. Because if he try, his wife will hang him in the kitchen using her Irish kilt. |

Yes, it would just be kinda...like...sharing your wealth around...sort of! And we all know what a generous-spirited individual you are right?
Scot, where I am, it's quite normal for a man to have a second wife and even de riguer. If you don't tell anyone (about you and Cleo), I won't either, ok? But whatever you do, don't tell Mark Anthony ok?
(For the record, I only have one wife as I couldn't afford any more!! )

But, then it is just monogamy... same old same old...
Of course, it is a bit easier to schedule...

Personally, I don't know how any many can have the wherewithal, energy, finances, and time to be romantiically attached to more than one woman in his life! It takes all my strength just to keep my woman happy!
Perhaps I'm just showing my age, but hey, if you happen to have it, go ahead and flaunt it! Trust me though! If a woman (or 3) is involved, you'll pay for it one way or another! Either with your doctor who'll tell you to take it easy, or family and friends who'll wonder why the rarely ever see you!
I actually know sons and daughters here who have (step) brothers and sisters who they've never met because papa has another wife living in another town and it's a well kept secret. A friend of mine who is a tenant of such a man recently put her foot in it by mentioning 'your brother' to one such unaware sibling who scratched his head and replied, 'I don't have a brother!' (Er...yes you do mate!)
Of course, if any of you have read the famous book Sperm Wars, you'll read the scary statistic that 2/3 (66%) of all children born are from a different father than the one on the birth certificate!
Cheers

Unfortunately, I did not have the chance to read the above book (in fact I read the famous book Star Wars ).
Is the above statistic worldwide, or for a specific country? And which one? |

I saw the author on a Discovery Channel type program and it is general, not country or culture specific - according to him. His research has been questioned and I suspect an overstatement.
But, I also suspect that its veracity is not exactly an appropriate topic for an English teacher board - and that it should not degenerate into the usual culture bashing that usually ensues.

Yeah, you're probably right about the hype and overstatement part tho like many things, there's often a grain of truth in it somewhere. If you get a copy, you should read it as he gives some great examples that really hit a raw nerve especially about adolescents and their behaviour. I thought it very readable altho I agree that the title probably throws a lot of people off.

Well, I don't intend to do that tho with our loose cannon friend who managed to get the other thread locked, you never know. It's as you said about the statistic of 99%. I'm starting to see that now: just someone who wants to get into polemics to feel better about himself. He's like a kid whose candy was stolen, crying for attention because nobody would speak to him otherwise. He's like a bad smell that lingers in your house for so long that you learn to ignore it and, after a while, you don't even know it's there!
Amen!

Just for the record who here has what offspring ?
I have 4 children and 5 grandchildren.
But I do remember that old proverb," It is a wise child that knows its own father." That seems to be the message of that book with the disgusting title. |

Wow Scot!! I didn't know about those 5 grandkids, but I guess I shouldn't be surprised.
As to the book, don't be afraid of the title or the one suggested finding of the book that was presented here. The studies that were done by these biologists truly were very interesting. We humans often forget that we are mammals first.
It would be worth a summer read... (or locating a video of the program)

Congratulation Scot47 for the big and united family.
I think it is rare in UK to find a large and united family like Scot's one.
BTW, I have heard that his Excellency Gordon Brown will give 20 a week for family with children. I think uncle Brown is a generous Scottish man who looks after his people, including the English and Welsh. |

Just thought I'd add - for the benefit of the majority of contributers to this board who have barely spoken to a Saudi women in their lives - that most of the young Saudi women I work with say they would not drive even if they were allowed to do so. They also point out that in other Gulf countries such as the UAE or Qatar, relatively few women drive even though they are legally free to do so.
Of course, that is not to say that those women who would like to drive should not be given the option to do so, simply that, as far as most Saudi women seem to be concerned, the driving ban is not the burning issue many expats and foreign 'journalists' consider it to be. Same goes for that other obsession of foreigners - "the veil". |
