Okay, though, here goes in my full ignorant glory. And I get Newfoundland confused with Labrador a lot:
1. I think the capital is St. John's or St. John--isn't the other one capital of a Maritime province? It's like the Roughriders and the Rough Riders in the CFL. All the other ten good names were chosen, so they had to double up.
2. Gander has an international airport that was in the news a lot because they had a lot of planes rerouted there after 9/11. I have a sneaking suspicion that it is in Labrador, though.
3. Newfies are joked about by Canadians the same way Alabamans are joked about by Georgians, West Virginians by Ohioans, and Iowans by everyone who doesn't live in Iowa.
4. They breed some pretty big dogs in Newfoundland. Lovers of the water, they are.
5. Newfoundland was the landing point for the first Europeans who came to the New World--Norsemen who left ruins of settlements which can still be found on the coast. Of course they weren't ruins when they left. This may also be Labrador.
6. The name Newfoundland literally means "the land which has newly been found." The namers of Newfoundland were good, sensible people, not given to wild bouts of creativity.
7. Newfoundland was an independent(ish) nation until something like 1949? when it joined Canada proper.
8. I can find Newfoundland on a map lickety-split. It's in the northeast and provides an important buffer against attack from Greenland and Iceland.
9. Newfoundland does not have its own NHL franchise, but it has a lot of moose and other wildlife. The second part of this is, admittedly, just an educated guess.
Dang it, I don't even know ten things about Newfoundland off the top of my head. Did I pass? Can I be governor?
If not, please teach me about the glories of Newfoundland. At least about the glories of Tickle Harbor? |

I think you did pretty well.
The capital is St. John's.The capital of New Brunswick is Saint John.Gander is in the central part of NFLD,not Labrador.
For number 10 you could mention that Newfoundland is famous for it's own liquor called screetch.
I think you know more about NFLD than most Canadians.
IMO,You pass!
But you have to promise to visit Tickle Harbor. |

Well done Steiner. I think we could make you an honourary Newfie, eh?
Last Cdn question, name two people from Hockey Night in Canada? P.S. one of them likes plaid suits and high collars. |

| You know, I watched Hockey Night in Canada for four years (I got CBC when I lived in Sandusky, Ohio), but I don't know their names. It's been a while. If you had said "Who's Don Cherry?" I might have been able to tell you, but I'm afraid I'll have to fail this last test. |

I vote that we let Steiner rule NFLD since he was such a good sport and tried really hard.
Hail to the chief. |

OK, Ben, I'll go along with that. However, Steiner should learn a bit of the local dialect in order to fit in with the locals.
Ready Steiner?
When addressing a man, say "me son". When addressing a woman, say "me ducky".
Now repeat after me: "Stays where yer at till I gets where yer to."
Now you're ready to go, me son! |

The two stars of Hockey Night in Canada are Don Cherry and Ron McLean. I wouldn't want anyone to lose sleep over it.
But OK Steiner, we'll give you NFLD. We just don't want to see you in 11 months in a recall vote. That is what this thread is about isn't it? |

Well, thanks, me sons and duckies. I'll have to decline, though, since I have a contract with my school that runs another year. Might I add that I have not groped any woman I am not married to? I do think such upstanding moral character would have reflected well on Newfoundland, but they'll just have to stick with what they've got.
And without looking it up, may I ask you Canadians/Canadiens/Canadiennes who the current premier of NFLD is? |

I would like to renege my initial support of Arnold for his role as Governor of California. Sometimes scandalous things appear from someones past, sometimes sexual, sometimes immoral, and in the case of what I'm about to show you, sometimes completely incomprehensible:

The man who I admired as a child...the man who took out the Predator, legions upon legions of enemy soldiers and even a liquid metal machine from the future is now appearing RIDING AROUND ON A CIRCA 1860's BICYCLE INSIDE A SALARYMAN'S ANTI-HANGOVER DRINK.
I don't know whether to laugh or cry. But it's pretty incidental. Arnold isn't fit to remove the oil stains from my driveway, let alone govern a state. No man should do this to himself for money |

I'm not from Canada but I just read in 'Cutting Edge - Intermediate' that,
'The state of California has recently introduced a law which means that anyone convicted of three offences - however small - is automatically sentenced to between 25 years and life in prison.'
Wonder if Arnie will free all those guys that got caught stealing hot-dogs 3 times, or let them rot in jail where they should be. (sarcasm)
Is this real?
Should anyone trust Arnie?
Should anyone trust 'Cutting Edge'? |
