I can not have MSG under any circumstances, I get very ill. And too much processed food makes me sick too. I thought in Mexico I would eat well with fresh fruits and vegatables, beans, rice and tortillas.

When my doctor and I discussed my minor, yet special, needs we thought I'd do well on a Mexican diet, unless the kitchen wherever I ate wasn't kept clean - which rules out the cafeteria in my current workplace.

Oh my, you didn't mention pinguinos, did you? Throw those in the freezer and eat them cold. So good.

I simply meant you should go find a local market for fresh meats and produce. You don't see as much growth hormone, food additive color yellow #46, or irradiated food here as you do back home, since food doesn't need to travel 4000 km to your plate in Mexico.

As a vegetarian, you're aware of the need to find your protein combo. A lot of tortilla and beans does it of course, but get into local veggies as well. Fruit is abound and abundant too.

Get ready for a surprise...Mexican kitchens are kept immaculately clean.

Jetgirly,

I'm not exactly sure where you live, but if you are near the UNIVA campus I think you should still be able to find a market. I confess that I head out that way only when I'm desperate and going to the gigantic Sorriana, however, if you are close enough to Tepeyac and Cuauhtemoc, there is a market near there (on Cuauhtemoc).

I personally get a ton of cheap veggies every week at a market at Cruz del Sur and Conchitas (but I get there in my car).

I'm too new to the posting to know how to work the PM thing, but if you can send me your email address somehow that's not public, I'd be happy to help you find a market. Nobody should be without their leafy greens!

That's exactly what we eat and most Mexicans.
Don't judge the entire country by a young college student's experiences.

Strange, I lived in the suburbs in Guadalajara and found that getting fresh food was never a problem. In fact it was the opposite! Laughing All that fresh fruit, veg, cheese, homemade yogurt.....heaven! Even if there isn't a market on your doorstep, there should be one a short bus ride away.

My dieting consists of eating two bowls of cereal every day. I have adopted this habit within the past two years and every time I change over to it, I have dropped significantly in weight. When I first came to MX I weighed 93 kilos with my clothes on, and dropped 3 kilos very quickly because of the change of diet. Still not satisfied, I started a steady diet of 2 bowls of cereal and within a year I was down to 82 kilos. I have since gone off the diet and swelled back to 89 kilos and have only within the past week gone back on the diet.

For those of you who have misinterpreted what I have said, no, I don`t eat ONLY two bowls of cereal, but having consumed that much fiber, my stomach is not such an empty receptacle for additional foodstuffs.

The showers at the gym are SOOOOO nice they make me want to work out every single day. A day without a gym shower is a sad, sad day.
