| I have always wanted to check Russia out. Also, Vladivostok would be a great place to pick up the Trans-Siberian when I make my move to Europe. |

What do you think are the best cities in which to work, live and play in the following regions?
Region 1: North America (Canada, the US and the Carribean)
Region 2: Latin America (Mexico, Central America and South America)
Region 3: Europe (Western, Eastern and Russia)
Region 4: Asia (Middle East, Central Asia, Indian Subcontinent, Southeast and Northeast)
Region 5: Pacific (Aus, NZ, Hawaii and Pacific islands)
Region 6: Africa (North, Sub-Saharan)
On my short list would be New York, Berlin and Sydney. |
Work, live and play:
Region 1: San Diego, New York City.
Region 2: Anywhere on the Brazilian coastline, as well as Colombia.
Region 3: Europe is too expensive to live and work and find jobs as a non-Euro citizen.
Region 4: Japan, Korea, Vietnam.
Regarding someone who mentioned San Francisco.. I lived there for a good 18 months.. and its a beautiful city.. but a lousy one to live and work. Everything is overpriced and the jobs are few and far between. Most people in the Bay Area seem to be relocating elsewhere unfortunately. |

My choices...
Sydney:
Reason/s- too many to list- just love the place (not a native Sydney-sider or Aussie, but married to one).
Barcelona:
Reason/s- spent a far amount of time here while doing uni in Europe maybe not the cleaniest, friendliest, etc.. but something about the place- love it.
Copenhagen
Reason's- ah... summers in Copenhagen. Most beautiful women on the face of the earth- hands down (that may sound shallow- but I was once young and foolish- now I'm just foolish).
th-th-th-th-th-that's all folks!

Most beautiful/romantic city (cleanliness isn't an issue): Prague and Venice
Most exotic and fascinating: Istanbul
Most charming: Cesky Krumlov
Most historical: Jerusalem. You can't beat it! |

Newcastle - for its vibrancy, culture and friendliness.
La Paz - surreal, looks like it crashed landed there.
Numerous Italian cities - for their sheer beauty, romance and grandeur.
Delft/Amsterdam - any city where the bicycle rules is innately civilized.
Istanbul and Kathmandu - for their earthy humanity.
Nelson and Christchurch in NZ - laid back, great free summer events and a places to live long term. |

| I'm definitely going to have to check out Newcastle next time I'm that way with all the pro-Newcastle advocates on here. |

| I've got a serious Jones to head back to China, so my best city in Asia would be Chinese. Chengdu, Dalian, Changsha. |

At this particular time, I am most interested in Honolulu, Singapore, Bangkok, and Osaka or Fukuoka.
These lists seem to change over time however. Totally different than my list about a year ago on this same thread. |

Region 1: Vancouver (where I do work, live & play)
San Francisco (where I've never been to but dream about)
Montreal (La joie de vivre!)
Halifax (it would be nice to live by the Atlantic for a change)
Region 2: Valle de Bravo (it's not a city but it's near Mexico City & I
loved working, living & playing there)
Region 3: Paris (after seeing the movie Amelie..)
Florence (I fell in love with this city when I was 16 yrs old!)
Amsterdam (it's so eclectic!)
Region 4: Bethlehem (in 1984 when I was there it was still fairly peaceful)
Jerusaslem (in 1984 it was a fascinating city for me)
Kobe (I love the fact it's so similiar to Vancouver)
Kyoto (I love the temples & shrines, esp. Kiyomizu Temple..)
Nara (I love the deer park & Todaji Temple)
Region 5: I've never been anywhere in this region but I'm sure I'd like
any of the cities in Australia & New Zealand.
Region 6: I've never been anywhere in this region either, but I would love
to visit some cities in Africa someday.. |

Odessa - I would just say Ukraine as a whole, but I think Odessa would be the one place I would direct someone if they were visiting for a week (Kyiv's ok, too).
Krakow - Can be touristy, but a wonderful visit if you go during non-peak times. (Avoid Warsaw like the plague.)
Brighton - I love the feel of the city, and so many young people. Hey, the weather blows, but it's England.
Stockholm - Beautiful: parks, streets, people. Would be better if it were cheaper. Ditto for Oslo.
Buenos Aires - IMO, one of the great cultural capitals to visit (along with places like NY, Paris, Istanbul...). And very cheap (at least at this moment).
Istanbul - Amazing but dirty.
Next stop, India and SE Asia...oh my! |

If I could choose only one city:
Region 1: North America: New Orleans, LA, USA. There is no better city in the world. If I could get a job that I wouldn't tear my hair out at, I would go back in a second.
Region 2: Latin America: Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. It's perhaps the only city that is as "fun" as New Orleans, with people as equally lively.
Region 3: Europe: Strasbourg or Colmar, Alsace, France. I prefer the German-influenced Alsace to the rest of France, but not enough to actually prefer Germany.
Region 4: Asia: Suzhou, Jiangsu, China. Even though I love Harbin and my understanding of Suzhouhua is "okay" at best, I love Suzhou for its climate and cuisine (both of which remind me of, again, New Orleans) as well as the actual beauty of the city and its people. One of my dearest friends is also friend Suzhou, so I could be a bit biased.
Region 5: Pacific: Vanuatu! Who wouldn't want to learn Bislama?
Region 6: Africa: There are many places where I'd want to live, but I'd love to visit Algiers, Algeria as I promised my Algerian friends from Boston I one day would. Barring there, I'd love to go to Zambia. |

I'm gonna go Big/Small
North America (using your geographic descriptions)
Big - San Francisco, California, USA
Small - Lunenburg, Nova Scotia, CAN
Latin America
Big - Buenos Aires, ARG
Small - Granada, NIC
Europe
Big - Paris, FRA
Small - Chania, GRE
(Though I'd like to visit Valetta in Malta, to compare)
Asia
Big - Shanghai, PRC
Small - Haven't been through enough smaller cities in Asia. Maybe Luang Prabang, LAO?
Never been to Africa or Oceania
Ranked overall, top 5:
1) Shanghai - loved every minute of my time there. Didn't love it when I first went to visit, but became absorbed by the culture. Feels like Tokyo when it was just getting its act together. What an exciting time to be there -- already a world-class city, and still exploding. The denizens KNOW they're part of something special, and you can feel it in the streets.
2) Buenos Aires - everything I love about Europe's great cities, but with that passionate Latin American cultural vibe. Plus, it's still dirt cheap!
3) Granada - perfect small city. Colonial architecture, colorful, cobbled roads, friendly people, practically zero cost of living, and surrounded by tropical lakes and jungle.
4) Paris - C'mon, it's Paris
5) Chania - the natural beauty of Crete and its maritime vistas and nearby gorges. Plus, a peculiar cafe culture that's equalled nowhere else on the planet. |
