Has anyone heard any news about plans for the region's first opera house?

I've been told that it is going to be opened next year in Muscat! Smile

Meanwhile, plans are already falling into place in Sohar
for the 5th Sohar Music Festival.

Provisional dates for your diary are as follows:-
The opening event of this 'not-for-profit' festival
is probably going to be held on 20th October at the Al Batinah International School.
The following weekend - on 28th Oct. -there'll be a 'World Music' event at the Sohar Beach Hotel.
And, the climax of this year's festival - the International Jazz Evening -
will be held at the Sohar Crowne Plaza Hotel on 4th Nov. 2010. There will also be a charity event -a Gala Evening - at the same venue on the preceding evening.

No doubt details of performers will be appearing on the festival's revamped website -
www.soharmusicfestival.com in the next few months.
Currently, Jan Dumee and Magda Mendes are expected to be joined by Peter Getz, (son of Stan),
along with Wieke Garcia - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fDtguFk1QFE - and Double Espresso.

Here is some more exciting news about this year's Sohar Music Festival....

The legendary Thijs van Leer will be performing alongside of
Jan Dumee and Magda Mendes at the International Jazz Evening
on 4th November 2010 at the Sohar Crowne Plaza Hotel! Very Happy

Here is a clip of Thijs Van Leer in action as lead yodeler
and keyboard player for Focus
I think that the young TV presenter is Oprah Winfrey....

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RFDW9b_ejfI

IMHO it's even better than Mamma Mia!

This year's Sohar Music Festival is drawing near! Very Happy

An article in the current edition of "theweek"... http://www.theweek.co.om/disCon.aspx?Cval=4186
expresses the ethos of this festival well.

The festival opens on Wednesday, 20th October at the Al Batinah International School, ( http://abisoman.com/ ).
It will feature young dancers and musicians from the school and from the Indian Music Institute.

The World Music Night will be held at the Sohar Beach Hotel ( www.soharbeach.com ) on Thursday, 28th October.
It will have Drummers from ABA School with a Cuban element,
So Sing Sohar Ladies Choir, Sohar Salsa Group performance by Sohar salsa dancers,
Mark Gresty and the Emotikons multi cultural band, and returning once more,
the ABA band from the ABA school Muscat featuring rock/pop performances.

Unfortunately, Thijs Van Leer has withdrawn Sad from the International Jazz Evening to be hosted
at the Sohar Crowne Plaza Hotel
on Thursday, 4th November.
However, a replacement act is being sought for a line-up already packed full of talented musicians.... including

Magda Mendes- http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=z-K28K7vXzI
with Jan Dumee - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3uXwU9G8Hqg&feature=related

Double Espresso - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=voC1exHckDY&feature=related with
Wieke Garcia - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fDtguFk1QFE&feature=related
plus Terence Samson - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VUdBVlxTtdQ on percussion;

and, the
Peter Getz Band - http://www.youtube.com/user/mediablom#p/u and http://www.getz.se/ Smile

The riots and unrest in Sohar earlier in the year have affected adversely
the plans for the next Sohar Music Festival.

Currently, it looks unlikely that there will be an SMF2011.
However,it is possible that a music festival will be organised
in Sohar at some point next year...
and maybe even a Mamma Mia evening, too!

At present, the SMF website is down; however,
videos of the SMFs are still available on youtube.com via the SMFs own channel :-

Good grief! Someone else has contributed to this thread Exclamation
How dare you, sir?! Smile

The website for the SMF - www.soharmusicfestival.com
has been updated recently.
Bands and sponsors for the next festival are being sought.
My best guess now is that there will be more live music arriving
in Sohar in the spring of 2012...

I'll post again when I have some more concrete information,
bookworm2

Earlier in this thread I made mention of the new Royal Opera House -the first in the region -
would be opening in Muscat.

Sultan Qaboos officially opened the venue...

A source close to the SMF's organising committee
informs me that SMF 2012 is likely to be held
over the first three Thursday evenings in March 2012.
