I would suggest you find a Colonia you like, and then look one Colonia further out. Escandon is a good option, close to the trendy areas, but a bit less pricey. Noche Buena is another good one, near Condesa and Roma, but more reasonable and more like a "real" neighborhood. The trendy neighborhoods tend to be a lot more transient and impersonal and have a higher crime rate than just everyday middle class, or mixed areas. If you are looking for the "Mexican experience" you would be better off living where Mexicans live, not expats. You will pay less, all around, as well, for everything from rent to food to clothing. More important than where you live is access to public transportation. I have a Metrobus line a block from my house, a Metro line 4 blocks away, government buses two blocks away, and a taxi stand 4 blocks away. There are also micros, run down, unsafe buses that go everywhere as well, but I don't use those anymore. You are far safer using the government provided options. In addition, I wouldn't recommend just grabbing a taxi on the street, especially if you are obviously not Mexican or don't speak Spanish well. This is probably a bit less true for men than women. But I feel my security is worth the extra two or three pesos I pay to use a taxi from a stand. At the one in my neighborhood I know about half the drivers, and can even call a couple of them to come and pick me up somewhere if I am out and about. Three of them are actually neighbors, and one is my maid's son, so a lot more secure than just a random taxi on the street.

Do the Mexicans in your neighbourhood wear sarapes to work and shoot pistolas in the air for each goal against Olympic opponents? Wink

Just teasing...the "Mexican experience" isn't that easy to nail down in modern times I should think. That can mean any number of things across this country, or within this city. How many Mexicans shop at supermarket Soriana instead of the local tianguis for example? At least enough to vote EPN into power I guess...

As we have discussed before, I apparently run with a much less cultured group than you do, haha. Pistolas, cohetes, you name it, just about any noisemaker will do. Not just for the Olympics, but pretty much any soccer game.

Obviously, your "Mexican experience" will be different in a large city than in a small town, but it will also be different if you live, and interact, with mostly Mexicans, as opposed to living with, and interacting with, mostly, or entirely expats.

I can honestly say I have never set foot in a Soriana. I don't even know where one is. I prefer the tianguis, but that's just me.
