I have always been partial to, "I don't know, why don't you ask that question to Colonel al-So-n-so", or "That's a good question...maybe my supervisor can answer it!"

You'll never see THEM change the subject so darned fast! Laughing Laughing Laughing

Effective for adults. How would you adapt that for teenagers, who are just trying to see if they can get you into trouble?

How does one handle a class that wants to talk about taboo subjects? Just when (and how) does one cut a student off, or gently change the subject?

You handle it the same way you do in any classroom anywhere in the world. There are always taboo subjects. For me it depended on the class... and the topic that they were trying to get into... there is no one answer.

I always sternly say: "You know we are not allowed/it's not okay for us/it's haram to discuss this. Now, can we get back to x, y, z?"
This has always worked for me and the students are very understanding and move on.

I always look shocked - totally over the top so they know I'm not upset or offended - then ask them if they want me to lose my job by discussing inappropriate topics. Usually this raises a laugh and that's it.
However, sometimes students do want to discuss serious topics as they are interested in the view of an outsider. If I know them well, I give them the opportunity but control where the discussion goes. And there are still certain topics I probably wouldn't discuss.

So how does one go about beating back that 45 degree summer sun? I picked up one of those traditional red and white checkered head-things that are worn in Syria... but I think that'd make me a little too obvious!

Seriously, how do you protect your head and neck from not getting burnt to a crisp? I don't normally wear baseball caps; they just don't suit me.

Adopt the habits of a vampire? My outside excursions in the hotter periods are short and sweet! Speaking of hotter periods, my, how it has hotted up recently...glad to be going home soon! Shocked We'll be returning to a cauldren, but, as always, looking forward to the glorious winter months! Very Happy

You just plain don't go out in the sun if you can possibly avoid it. I never put anything on my head. For many months, I mostly just went from flat to car to college and back... as quickly as possible. Laughing

It's not as bad as you think or people suggest. It can get to 45 in Spain, Greece, parts of the US, Australia.... You don't have to dash from car to air-con. I have never had a problem with wandering around even at this time of the year. Not all hats in the world are of the baseball ilk.

Good advice VS, one should leave the midday sun to mad dogs and Englishmen. In my experience most Asians (women anyway) use a brolly, indeed anything to block the sun.

Well spotted there, Mr johnkg, I was just remarking on the old sun situation where I have been for the last 11 years which is far east Asia. I should have added ......Is it the same in the ME?
Yes, erm ok, you can have deux points before I traipse back to the darkened room and I'll take the dog as well.

Thank Heavens for that, we don't want any Johnny come lately, from beyond the rings of Uranus for instance, upsetting the even tenor of our ways.
The old finger wagger (A term I cheekily stole/ From Mr Sheik Radinrol) never swims before 4pm because of the sun, actually my most blindly painful experience of the sun was in Melbourne.......instant headache jobby
