I must go and check out Petra before I cross over to the other side. I was last there in 1972. There was one hotel. I was the only guest and I emptied the bar of their stock of bottled beer !
Now of course I lead a righteous life and do not indulge in these things. |

Scot,
Perhaps you set yourself upon a completely different sort of mischief?

I visited Petra almost a decade ago, so things may have changed since then. And yes, while I didn't get ripped off, it wasn't for want of trying by the myriad hustlers. That being said, I haven't been to Egypt. People who have been and who know me, tell me that with my relatively low-tolerance of hustlers I should avoid Egypt at all costs |
Ah Bebsi... they are just trying to make a living. Much depends on the economy at the time you visited. Naturally if tourists are down, hustling is up. But I always found that a knowledge of some Arabic and a smile worked wonders. Or maybe that works better for women.
The most amazing part of Petra that people often don't see is how large it is. Most people do it in a day trip. I have spent 7 full days there and still haven't seen it all. I never said that the animals had an easy time there, but there are rules for rest... and injured animals don't have to work. But, they are not pets, as it is for most donkeys of the world. I never even rode any of the horses there... I always walked up and down the Siq.

Queen Noor, King Hussein's (last) wife was American of Lebanese Christian descent. King Abdullah's mother was British.

Quen Noor's paternal grandfather was Syrian, not Lebanese (hence the name, Halabi). Her mother's family are of Swedish origin. I think it's fairly obvious which side of the family this tall, blonde woman takes after. (Cue somebody telling me that actually lots of Syrians are quite fair...)

| His boy, Abdullah (with Queen Noor as his wife), tho, is well on his way of mimicing his Pa...a great choice in succession... |
Yes indeed. The Americans, Brits and Israelis are all quite satisfied with the services provided by him (and his horribly bland wife) thus far. |

As always, VS, quite right. Rania it is! Cleo, why is moderation such a bad thing?

Heh... no one yet. But some might say that the Syrians and Lebanese are one and the same... especially the Christians. But, we know how these debates usually go.
Abdullah is playing the hand that he was dealt... not an easy one with a country with such a bad location and no oil.

In and of itself, 'moderation' is neither good, bad, nor indifferent. But in any case, no dictionary that I know of defines 'moderation' as being a docile client of the US, and hosting an Israeli ambassador who, (unlike his counterpart in Venezuela,) was allowed to remain in situ while his country was bombing a neighbouring civilian population.
The Hejazi-British dictator of Jordan is not a moderate. He presides over a 'secret police' who are rumoured to be the most, um 'efficient' in the region. His 'security services' have arrested people for - I kid you not - sending text messages critical of him and his family. His regime is at least as brutal as that of neighbouring Syria, the only significant difference being that Jordan is a reliable tool of US policy in the region.

His name indicates that he was from what is now Syria. But yes, at the time we went to America, Lebanon probably did not even exist as a nation. In those days, most people from what is now Lebanon referred to themselves as "Syrians". |

He's one of two who has signed a peace treaty with the occupiers of Palastine. In the ME, you can't get more moderate than that!

Well, you should ask Leon E. Panetta, the director of CIA, he holds the secret and unclassified files of Jordan during that period!
I guess one of the reason why Uncle Sam stopped paying King Hussein is when the king aligned himself in late 70s with the "rejectionist front" of Arab states.

Well, in the eyes of Uncle Sam he is a moderate, but in the eyes of the majority of Arab/Muslim population he is a 'traitor'. |
