When I think of the best views I've ever had, somehow the Tragic Kingdom misses the mark. I think of places like Seattle, Paris, Holland, Hawaii, and even parts of Manama.

To each his/her own.

The one most memorable moment for me in Saudi was out in the desert in the midle of nowhere on a camel ranch. There away from all the traffic, city structures and noise I felt a peace that I never experienced in the cities.

The sun setting on the horizen, dunes taking on a redish color and the sound of silence. That's priceless and was worth my trip to Saudi.

I'm talking about the view out of my front room window.

I lived for a year in Barcelona in a flat with glass walls looking onto a medieval convent. That was the best view I've had from my window, but Jubail and Dahran follow it in second and third places.

With increasing wealth comes trash. Vietnam is an example. Rivers, mountain roads winding through forests, beaches and country lanes are littered with refuse. The event of the obnoxious plastic bag, aluminium cans and disposable food containers have cursed this country. I found an interesting thing happened to me after the shock of seeing a rubbish lined mountain road on the way to Da Lat; I became desensitized.
I asked an obvious question in my early days here: 'Why do you leave your rubbish in gutters?' Answer: 'If we didn't, rubbish collectors would be out of work.' That response may have relevance in cities, but obviously not in the countryside where mountains and beaches are liberally littered with trash.
A recycling campaign has just been intiatied and a question in a local newspaper is indicative of the prevailing mindset: 'How can I tell then difference between organic and inorganic material?'

Well, just for curiosity, what type of breakfast items which exist in Bahrain and do not exist in the Magic Kingdom?

Probably kangaroo meat, you ding-a-ling!

Nobody seems to care what public spaces look like in KSA.

I think that's basically it.

I have been in luxurious palaces, with swimming pools and antique French furniture, but you'd never guess it to drive past. Right outside the high walls, there would be broken pavements, cats crawling through rubbish skips and general ugliness. I think the very sharp distinction which Saudis make between public and private - with the former being of little importance - is the cause of this.

Maybe I'm the only one here old enough to remember the attitude towards littering that was prevalent in the US back in the 40s and 50s.
The attitude basically was - the great outdoors in my personal trash bin. People though nothing of throwing stuff from car windows or just dropping garbage anywhere on the ground as they were walking.
It took a number of years, a number of laws, and a lot of "public education" before the general citizenry had it hammered into their collective consciousness that littering is NOT such a great idea.

Let's cut the Saudis (and other littering nations) a little slack and see how they're doing in, say, twenty or thirty more years.

Regards,
John

VS don't you weep for Uncle Scott
I'm going to the Magic KIngdom, me Uncle Scott to see
Uncle Scott, now who is he - he's a soldier I can tell
For I know that you're fond of camel milk both cold and boiled as well
Uncle Scott is an English teacher, and he is a handsome chap
And he wears a fine white moustache, he goes in a stunning furry Scottish cap"
Oh VS don't you weep for Uncle Scott!

Again, let's find fault elsewhere (no matter how dated).

I've been on planet earth for awhile, and in all those years the US NEVER looked like the Dingdong of Saudi Arabia.

Very poor comparison.

Let's not cut them some slack. Sans common sense they will never amend their trash-tossing ways.
