Well, I'm still "cute":

Date: circa 1731
1 a : clever or shrewd often in an underhanded manner b : impertinent, smart-alecky <don't get cute with me>
2 : attractive or pretty especially in a childish, youthful, or delicate way
3 : obviously straining for effect

Meaning number 2, of course.

Regards,
John

As a blabbermouth I cannot keep "schtumm" any longer. The deal on my retirement is that I have organised my housing on an island in the Clyde Estuary. A Housing Association there was good enough to offer me a secure tenancy on a house at a controlled rent.

You see - there can be life after Saudi Arabia ! I should live so long !

Others reaching retirement and contemplating a future in Caledonia might like to consider the same route. But please choose another island !

But please remember:

Oman is no island.

John

Rent? Shocked

After all these years you still didn't buy your own place?!

I think we should all band together and buy him a place... he deserves it! Cool

Scots are like other Europeans. Rental is the way to go. Look at where all these delusions about property ownership got you ! Continuing collapse of the financial and economic system !

"Property-owning democracy " ? Leave that tosh to Thatcher, who is increasingly seen to be the Prophet of Multiple Delusions.

Well....somebody has to own all those houses and buildings...most of them aren't generally open to crack ho's off the street. Would you prefer the government owned them all, or big corporations? Who owns your place?

Let's see...government owns them all? "I'm back in the USSR, you don't know how lucky you are, boy..." How about "I'm back in North Korea!"

Big corporations own them all? Welcome to massive yearly rent increases until you can't afford them anymore Wink

That said, I'm going to rent too, in retirement!

A Housing Association is my landlord. Rent is controlled. Currently about 240 pounds sterling a month for 54 sq m. apartment. It is in a row ("terrace") of houses built originally in the 1830's and renovated about twenty years ago. Well-insulated. Gas central heating. In the town centre and only minutes from the ferry terminal

I will refrain from making unkind comparisons with our neighbours south of the Solway and the Tweed.

When I retired, I got rid of the expensive real estate that I owned and I too now rent. That said, eventually I will inherit my mother's condo. There are certainly pros and cons...

The type of situation described by Scot doesn't really exist in the US. Rent controlled housing is rare... and normally not where one would want to live.

Dear veiledsentiments,

Well, some people might like NYC or San Francisco.

"They (rent controls) remain in effect or have been reintroduced in some cities with large tenant populations, such as New York City, San Francisco, Los Angeles, Washington, D.C., and Oakland, California. Many smaller communities also have rent control, notably the California cities of Santa Monica, Berkeley, and West Hollywood, along with many small towns in New Jersey."

John

Most of those fit under my description... rare (only in a some of the large urban areas) and most of it one would not want to live anywhere near, no less in...

I am familiar with some of the ones in the DC area... no thanks... not without an armed guard.

You know... if one cleans one's car the same as one cleans one's home... it doesn't smell at all. Cool

Madam, I was referring to the exhaust and to the detrimental effect of your machine on Planet Terra. They are nasty and smelly and the Great Volcano will punish you for having one. You wait and see !

Dear scot47,

"I was referring to the exhaust and to the detrimental effect of your machine on Planet Terra."

So, to avoid all that, you take SAPTCO buses?

Regards,
John
