Your good times are attributed to people who are: Basically genuinely good
people, friendly, hard working, honest, sincere, loving, and like to have a good time and a happy life. They are the salt of the earth.
Your bad times(0-5%) of your life are attributed to people who are: Ignorant,
stupid, idiotic, arrogant, snobbs, self-centred, self-righteous, bigots, and racists. Here is the bottom line-no nation or nationality or creed has a monopoly on any of the above!
However, if you smile the whole world will smile with you and if you cry there is a good chance you cry on your own! |

| I am an American, spent a year and half in China in 2007-8 and a year now, 2009-10. I have experienced no negativity about being an American, the reverse, I get respect because of it. |

A lot of people respect their enemy, but it doesn't necessarily mean that they like them. During wars, many soldiers respect those that they're fighting against, but still want to kill them. |

You know what struck up in my mind when you posted this?
That's right the Ojays song THE BACKSTABBERS..How ironic.
(What they do!)
(They smile in your face)
All the time they want to take your place
The back stabbers (back stabbers)

Human nature is good, most of our dislikes for someone and our hatred for others are learned responses: Think of a baby who is born crying and hungry, do you think it cares if the food is from a bottle, a mother who is white, black, brown or red? How many babies grow up to hate the bottle or its mother because of her color, or her politics or her social status? I bet you'll have trouble finding a few of them.
Look at history: There were Americans in China establishing schools and missionaries who did what they could to help the Chinese to catch up. The
Chinese, however, decided to pocket much of the assistance given to them we now know as "corruption and greed". The Chinese decided to fight each other to get control of their own country. No one was saying "Don't let the Chinese have their country back"! The Chinese decided that they should hate the Americans because they chose to side with the Christian General Chiang.
It does not mean the Americans decided to be enemies of the Chinese.
This has been proven true when Mao decided it was time to play "ping pong" and reverse the old decision. It was a "political" decision all along to be enemies or friends. Americans and Chinese have been friendly and neighbourly, by nature.
Again the present atmosphere and trend is good and friendly between
China and America. Any animosity between nations or peoples is purely
a decision of the politicians, not by people on the ground who try to live
a decent life!
So why the dislike and hatred sometimes? Greed for power and material wealth! |

| Silent Shadow got it right. Chinese respect Americans like a team or player would a strong opponent. They see America and Americans as their opponents... |

I am still trying to decide if I prefer to be respected or liked |

I'm trying to figure one thing out. Why do Africans tell Chinese they are American?
I don't see any more problems for me in this 500,000 mining town I am in but I see a lot of Chinese going for each others throats these days. Long hot summer. |

Probably because many Chinese cannot tell the difference between an African and an African-American.
An American, as a native speaker, typically can have a higher salary and more opportunities in and out of work. |

I suspect, because, they believe it would help them get better teaching jobs. |

And of course there'd be even more anti-Chinaism if the world didn't give China some grace because we still sympathize for its place as a developing country with lots of poverty. China is at least garnering itself as negative an international image as possible lately with its actions in the Sudan and domestic human rights issues concerning Tibet and Xinjiang specifically and beyond that as well. Yes, China can claim a considerable "anti" feeling within the international community too.
There is anti-Americanism in the world, yes, and then there's the odd reality of huge demand in every country around the world to visit and/or live in America. Go figure? And when America tries to tighten visa policies because our country has far more visa requests each year than any nation our earth, the loud complaints never stop... Hm. I don't get it. |

My friends and family back home complain most about China's seemingly frequent habit of exporting unsafe food, toys, and medicine.
That is the most common "anti-Chinaism" that I am aware of. |

| Judging from the experiences by my African friends, I would say that a major reason for them to claim being American is because a) Chinese people know that there are many African-Americans, whereas they tend to think that other countries are as ethnically-homogeneous as theirs and b) some Chinese people think that everyone from Africa has HIV. |
