Becuase the FIEI is only for your MAIN job. Online teaching goes under self employment. Same in the US. You work FT as a teacher, then do some consulting, you have to pay US taxes.
BUT as hollysuel mentions, if you already pay taxes like she did, then you can file the 2555 for your main job and the 1116 for your other jobs. And if online teahching is your only job, then choose whether to do the 2555 (if you're putting that online company asyour employer) or the 1116 (if you're putting yourself as self employed) |
Wow - first I'm hearing of that. I'm assuming you checked this out with an accountant? |
Nope, look on IRS.gov Don't believe that accountants are all that cracked up to be. I've had two tell me I dont' even have to file and a friend of mine's told him he had to pay payroll tax, even though he lives in Korea.
The 1116 is a little known form, not like the 2555. It's for foreign taxes paid. For example, you make 100K (wouldn't that be nice ) assuming you work for one employer have no other complicated things, just straight forward.
You can get $91,500 for the FEIE and the other $8,500 would go under the 1116. |

Can you point me to a publication that talks about the self-employment part? I have been looking all over and can't find anything that mentions this. |

Hmm...got some real honest folks in here lol
You do realize paypal doesn't disclose your income if it doesn't exceed $20,000, right? And it has to meet other criteria, too.
Sorry, naturegirl, not seeing what you're saying (I don't get why you'd have to pay all these social security, FICA, etc if you're out of the US) but I'm going to keep looking into it...I'm sure you've spent a lot more time on it than I have. |

Look, my grandfather was audited about 5 years after he died. He owed $500 the year he cheated on his taxes. With fees and interest, my grandmother ended up paying $5000.
What goes around comes around. You have to pay. It's the law. Do I like it? No, of course not, it royally sucks. Do I file taxes and pay what I owe? Yes, I do.
WOuld I consider giving up US citizenship to get out of taxes? At this point in time, yes, I might. BUt until then I'm stuck filing and paying where applicable.
I owe because I have self employment. I write online and sell TEFL ebooks. I'm not making a lot. YOu're talking less than $2000 a year, but it's somehting. I dno't pay taxes on that to Peru or Korea, so I have to pay to the US. that's the reasoning. The US wants you to pay taxes SOMEWHERE. Which is why the 2555 and 1116 were written. YOu CAN get out of some taxes legally. BUt self employment (if you don't pay to one country) then you owe the IRS. |

In Guatemala, if I were to do what you're doing, I would have to pay taxes if I wanted to work with businesses. So - I guess I would be covered here, and wouldn't have to pay US taxes for that income - I guess that's what you're saying.
Makes me want to get another passport, too |

Right, just pay one govt, but then you STILL have to tell the US about it. Another passport? Don't think that'll solve your problems too fast. Taxes where my other passport are from are 30%. Joy! |

| This may be a stupid question, but do I really need to get the headset with the mic if i have a built in cam with a mic? Can I just use my regular headphones? And if so, where do I get one from in Mexico? This right now is the only thing really holding me back from applying to these places |

The problem with the built in mics is that the quality is lower and you have a bigger problem with echos, which could turn off students. Another issue is that if your built in mic is really good, your students will also hear you typing and everything else that goes on in the room. It also depends on the virtual classroom you are using and the Voip technology you are using. It is up to you, but the headsets just give your students (and you) a higher quality experience. They headsets/mics only cost about $20. |

| How many of these places require you use a PC instead of a Mac (obviously I only have access to a Mac)? |

| Ive checked out some and there are a few that will allow MACs. I also saw one that mentioned you use whatever messenger you want ( Skype, MSN, Google chat, etc) so it wouldnt matter if you had a MAC or not. |

The only company I'm familiar with that doesn't work with a Mac is Tutor ABC. |

I'm currently moving to Tarapoto, Peru, a jungle town kind of in the middle of nowhere, and I'm looking for potential on-line English teaching jobs. I'm hoping to supplement whatever I can make from private classes.
The last posts here were in February, and some of the online institute links are not now working.
I'm wondering; what experiences people have had with different online schools? Have people actually been able to make money and have reliable classes?
What online schools would you now recommend, and what are their working links?
I have 2.5 years teaching experience and a CELTA; however I don't have a university degree. Could that potentially cause me problems in getting jobs with these online institutes?
Thanks! |

I know Tarapoto, be prepared for hot weather. From my experience, it's hard to get into online teaching. Many places are just platforms and they require you to plan all your lessons, etc and take a portion of your pay. there seem to be a few people making good money, but many make little.
New online jobs pop up all over the place, try Dave's, seriousteachers, and TEFL.com
I don't know about the lack of a degree. |

The only reputable company that I am aware of that might take you without a degree is Tutor ABC out of Taiwan. Other companies (where you can make money and not just post your profile and wait) require degrees and experience teaching either in a face-to-face or live online environment.
