And if they're going to featherbed higher education, as that newspaper clipping stated, will there also be a concerted effort to boost English language proficiency across the land, and a subsequent relaxation of visa requirements to accomodate more teachers? C'mon, look into your crystal ball ...

If you knew anything about the Gulf, you wouldn't even have to ask. Whatever business there is exists for the purpose of sucking petrodollars out of the government in one way or another. We expats whether cleaners or teachers are there to facilitate it. At least we teachers benefit more than the cleaners.

(PS... have you looked up the meaning of xenophobic yet so that you can properly apologize to JohnSlat for your bizarre accusation?)

I don't need to look it up. Xenophobia is an irrational fear of strangers, commonly ascribed to race or nationality or in fact any group of outsiders. For example, "Asian teachers" are " cheap, poorly qualified and/or inexperienced EFL teachers, whose experience is confined to teaching conversation in east Asia, and who know nothing about the needs of the Gulf student", right? That generalization may or may not be true. But if it isn't, if it's just an opinion without any basis of fact, then it represents a kind of knee jerk "fear or "mistrust" of an outside group of teachers, who are perceived as some kind of threat to an inner group.

For the record, I have not accused anyone of being xenophobic. I merely asked a question.

Ok chappies? Are we done here now? All the ruffled feathers smoothed back? Good. Have a nice day.

Dear Daddyo,

Having spent a third of my 67 years on this planet in countries/cultures different from my own, I doubt that I am too xenophobic.

But I suspect that I may fast be acquiring a case of Daddyophobia.

Regards,
John

That's got nothing to do with it and you know it.
And I think we could live without the wise cracks...

Hey where's Cleo? Did s/he go home to mother?

The only apology owed here is to those inexperienced, cheap, awful etc. etc. ESL teachers over on the Asia boards.

Hey, Einstein, yer ilustration is a stereotype.

Seriously, take out a crowbar, wrench open yer billfold and buy that dictionary that we've suggested you acquire...
