Smoking has been proven to be harmful to your health and those around you who are passive smoking. It says so on the box!

Anyway, in Islam I am not permitted to knowingly cause harm to myself or others around me directly. We do as much as we can and just saying "inshaAllah" kind of goes against the true essence of "inshaAllah".

A person may run away from the decree of Allah TO the decree of Allah. (don't scratch your heads if you don't get it - it makes perfect sense to those who fathom it)

... Just my little thoughts on the topic.

Thanks.

It's just like those apparently PH'd fools shouting about how smoking will kill you.. But, if it hadn't been indulging for the past 35 years, I would have died from a stroke or heart attack by now. Who knows the exact date and time of our death ... only Allah .. and that date is irrespective of our intake. (unless it's alcohol I guess..)

Hold on, there. Are you saying that if you hadn't been a smoker, a stroke or heart-attack would have killed you? Smoking saved you?? Are you trying to say smoking is not only safe, but life-saving, while alcohol is certain to kill you?

My father was a heavy drinker in his early days, and a smoker also. He really cut down on both in his middle-age, i.e. mid fifties.

Guess which killed him? Yes, smoking.

I think you really need to learn a bit more about both alcohol and tobacco.

Hmmm,

I really have opened a small can of the proverbial .. haven't I.
It's fascinating how much passion people have for their own point of view.

Smoking saved you??

Absolutely Bebsi..
Although, as I briefly noted, who really knows?!?
Chances are I'll be killed trying to cross the road to the corniche any day now.. Who knows..?
Why bother getting religious over futile attempts to add 2 weeks/2 years to the ==>END of your life. It's just plain stupid. (In my personal opinion..)
We WILL die of something! Chances/Odds are it WILL be a stroke/heart attack/cancer irrespective of what we ate, drank or smoked along the way.
I believe in eating whatever tastes good (huge chunks of red meat with lots of fat), I dislike the taste of alcohol, therefore I drink coca cola, smoking is calming and relaxing (for me) I smoke because it has a positive effect on me here and now.
If it doesn't work for you, that's great.
But please don't tell me that you will die from cancer because of a few silly cigarettes without considering first, the greater contributers to uninhaleable air. (factories; planes; cars; volcanoes) Placing a cigarette amongst these and then elevating it to the ridiculous level to which it has been placed is naive and ignorant of apparently educated people. (Perhaps I had better qualify by saying .. "in my opinion", before I cause a riot here..) Wink

People smoke because they are addicted to nicotine. Plain and simple. To say that it calms you or is soothing is just the ego speaking to justify the addiction. The fact is nicotine starts to leave your system relatively quick after you stop which is why you also tend to light up again because your body craves the nicotine. Your excuses are merely justifications to continue your addiction to nicotine. You are in denial. Or... in other words...you're an addict! Cool
I know, because I'm also addicted! Very Happy Embarassed

In the UK they have the words "SMOKING KILLS" plastered in huge capital letters and in some cases accompanied by a picture of a man suffering from cancer. Yet cigarettes are a billion pound industry...strange for a non-smoker like me to understand the mentality.

Of course, there is a second issue. If one wants to kill oneself... or spend the last 20 years of your time here ill and unable to live much of a life... sitting and wheezing while wishing that one could walk more than a block or perform any other physical activity, please do keep smoking so that you can significantly multiply your chances of joining this happy group.

But in respect of the rest of us, please stay far away so that we don't have to deal with the putrid stench of your breath, clothes, and hair. Don't indulge in your addiction inside of any room that will ever be used by the public, especially children.

Vertical sounds like a victim of incredible ignorance. By 1964 or so all the evidence was there.

Even a Beijing smog doesn't kill or maim you as fast as cigarettes do.

Dear Al-Mansoor,

It's OK - the character smoking the cigar is already dead (or IS he?)

Regards,
John

I gathered that wasn't the real Sheikh, however the cigar does promote the habit, doesn't it?

Perhaps an image of Don Corleone in a dark room would be appropriate as The Sheikh? If smoking doesn't kill you ...

Thank you VS.. at last an honest request. This is exactly my point. I am certain that the vast majority of people who slap the "health" reason in our faces, actually dislike the smell.
I agree with you 100%.
I gave up for over a year (about 27 years ago) and I was amazed at how easily I could detect a smoker from 5-10m away.
I assure you, any person who asks me nicely, to please not smoke near them, because they dislike the smell. I will honor the request immediately.
But any person who has arrived in a car and asks me to stop smoking because I am "killing them" ..... I am tempted to challenge them to a smokathon. I will smoke 20 cigarettes, simultaneously and continuously, while they breathe the fumes from the exhaust of their car. (I will even allow them the use of a filter.) We will see who lives longest...
This is my point... be honest and I will respect the request.. but the second hand smoke from my cigarette, I assure you, is having such a miniscule effect on anyone elses longevity, that it is hardly worth the amount of time, money and energy it receives.
Thanks again for that honesty - you get 10 respect points!!
.ps. I, the smoker, am the one doing all that walking every day. No health nor fitness problems here, I assure you. Besides the required medical to get here, the last time a saw a GP was 12 years ago, when I was bored and wanted my tonsils out (to get some rest in a hospital). Sadly, he saw through my ploy, so I still have my tonsils. Perhaps I'll try that trick again here, now that I have my official medical aid card.
