Dear It's Scary,
Thank you. I'd forgotten that scot47 was there back when it was called Arabia Felix, in the pre-Islamic days.
Regards,

In the old days 20 gersh (gurush = piastres) was one riyal. It is now 100 halala. |

Wikipedia has a wonderfully confusing description of the evolution of Saudi money and the terms used.

In Japan at a US campus in 1989 I stole a local girlfriend from a Dutch lecturer. This guy was typically a bad Dutch stereotype. We had excellent free on-campus housing, but he moved in to her house, she cooked for him, and he made her pay for the all food and everything! And here he was earning $3000 a month tax-free, a good amount in 1989. (Equivalent to $5200 today, according to measuringworth.com/uscompare) |

I lived in Holland for six years plus. The Dutch rep for being thrifty is quite true, I'll vouch |

On the other hand, back in the 1930s when Saud became king, he would drive around in his rolls royce chucking money out of the window to his people. So, not that much has changed. |

That's the one. According to wikipedia 'He was commonly referred to as Ibn Saud'. |

But never as just "Saud." That was his... like... 6-greats grandfather that the family used as their "tribal name" (not sure if the Saudis use the same terminology). One of his sons, Saud, was on the throne for 10-11 years until he was deposed and replaced by Feisal.
So... no one with knowledge of Saudi Arabia would ever refer to Abdul-Aziz as "Saud."
Sorry Grendal... you know how it goes if a thread is around too long.

LOL Pedantry doesn't get much better than this.
Hey, we don't refer to Barack Obama as Obama! We call him Barry! Don't you know anything? |

Call it what you will...
But if you mention Saud to anyone familiar with Saudi Arabia, they will ALL assume that you are talking about his son King Saud... never Ibn Saud.
They would all assume exactly that... that you knew nothing.

(PS... the Obama/Barry comparison makes zero sense in this context) |

Fact is that if you mention Saud to anybody in KSA they'll immediately think of the family that doles out piles of cash so's they don't have to get a job. |
