True, I am drawing from my experience in the US.
But even small US companies would take the approach I have described.

I just need to remember the famous Wizard of Oz quote:
"Dorothy, you're not in Kansas anymore".
This ain't America, and I need to leave my American mindset behind.

I've never visited a single language school in Mexico.

Maybe I should do a 'test run', at a school where I know I DON'T want to work, to get a feel for what to expect when I visit the schools I believe WILL be of interest? It's becoming obvious that I have no clue what to expect, and it might be helpful to take the mystery out of the equation and get in touch with reality.

That's pretty much what's been recommended here - it's good advice.

Do let us all know how it goes...I'm trying to think of a good example of a bad place to go, but then I don't want to colour opinion. In any case, the not-so-good schools I can think of are the ones that probably wouldn't let you simply drop by anyway!

Good luck with it!

Do you think that every English-language school or ESL provider will have English-speaking staff to talk with someone like me, when I visit the school?

I don't speak Spanish (yet). I certainly don't speak Spanish well enough to have a detailed (or even a basic) conversation with a school Director or Owner about becoming a teacher.

Can I assume that the Owner or Director of an ESL teaching organization will speak fluent English, if I request an appointment to talk with them?

I think you'd have to work very hard to find a school that is unable to have someone speak to you in English. You might get some broken English here and there mind you.

How 'bout a firm offer to show the man around? Sit in in some of your business classes? After all what are forum friends for?

Just a thought Smile

Best regards,
DL

That's what the get togethers are for! Speaking of which, when can we expect to be graced with a visit by the venerable Dragonlady in the big city?

LOLL - that all depends.
#2 and #3 are out of the question.
If you meant #1 or #4 there's a possibility although being compared to a tree - however grand that tree may be - is a little disparaging.
If it was #5 you were referring to I might be a tad offended.

I actually love the fair city of DF. It seems my long travel weekends never coincide with the get-togethers' dates.
And someday I'd love to do one of those boaty-ride thingies on the canal. Very Happy

venerable adjective
1. commanding respect because of great age or impressive dignity
2. a title for someone proclaimed by the Roman Catholic Church to have attained the first degree of sanctity or of an Anglican archdeacon.
3. (of places, buildings, etc.) hallowed by religious, historic, or other lofty associations: the venerable halls of the abbey.
4. impressive or interesting because of age, antique appearance, etc.: a venerable oak tree.
5 extremely old or obsolete; ancient: a venerable automobile.

Best regards,
DL

How strange! I had my doubts about "venerable" and was going to cut & paste those definitions. Beat me to it.

Very well...here's what I found that captures my definition.

http://dictionary.reference.com/browse/venerable

1. commanding respect because of great age or impressive dignity; worthy of veneration or reverence, as because of high office or noble character: a venerable member of Congress.

I thought it was a nice thing to say!

A Harmon Hall in Guadalajara I've been in contact with recently told me I would need a TOEFL certificate in order to work there. I am a native English speaker from Canada.

I don't have a problem with that per se, but I am curious why they require it and no other schools I've been in contact with require it. Those certificates aren't cheap either.

Not all native speakers can speak their own language! ...and the TOEFL (with high score) requires a pretty good level of grammatical English. Essential, I think, if you are going to teach it.
