It seems the release letter would have been needed during the police interview I was supposedly going to have for my residence permit. Turned out I just needed to fill in a form at the station and that was it. I think the uni also wanted it to make sure they are in the clear as well. It's just as well as the letter I finally got out of the school had been altered to put me at fault. Guess now is a good time to write up a warning about them...

I'm guessing that the police only needed to see the Z visa in my passport regardless of who it was attached to. I'm basing this on the fact that they never asked me where it came from or anything like that. Not sure if it sheds any light on my situation or if it helps anyone who finds themselves in the same position.
