I'm in Inner Mongolia.

Flight 2300RMB return.
Visa 450 RMB
Hostel 200 HK$ a night x3
Food+ drinks 500 RMB

so my whole cost was around 500 CDN/USD $$

Mind you the school paid for flight + visa.

You can still get a work visa in Hong Kong. The exception is Guangdong Province. You don't have to go to your home country. I met an American foreign teacher in GZ who got his work visa in Thailand.

Yes, Guangdong province is an exception for some reason. I got my Z visa at the Chinese Consulate in HK last March after having submitted all the required documents. I came from Shanxi province.

Nice school! I had to pay for everything. I loved HK, but loathed staying in a guesthouse room the size of a jail cell because of the unaffordability of staying at a regular hotel. The cheapest *** hotel I found for a one night stay costed what I would pay for 6 nights at a similar hotel in a mainland city. I never felt so poor in my life as I did while I was in HK coming from China on my salary. But the natives of HK suffer terribly from inflation as much as visitors to their city do.

I had to pay for accommodations, so I stayed at the chongking of course. I didn't really care as I spent most days wondering about and not worrying about money...
