I once shared your sentiments regarding the taxi driver and other working people. My companion pointed to a street sweeper in his orange suit and broom and said, "Even he has one" [a mistress].

Most of the Chinese people I know, educated people who speak English well, support the idea that mistresses are not limited to the very rich.

Really, it's not my business. What I object to is the double standard. Priggishness with regard to foreigners, balls to the wall with regard to personal gratification. Kongzi contrasted the people who require a lot of others and little of themselves with those who require much of themselves and little of others.

Of course, the double standards apply to not only these matters. it's the undercurrent of racism that runs through the place.

Locals enjoy imagining FTs as a bunch of horny guys bent on molesting local women. Maybe we are but they are no different. That's my point.
