What are they doing to each other? |
for example the way they treat their kids (I'm working in a kindergarten) not very gentle ( this is an understatement)
For example: they beat children severely if they eat too slowly in order to "teach" them to eat faster. There was a case of one 6-year old who was always late and the last to finish her meal. Once we went to a restaurant with that little girl (just us teachers and her) and in order to give her a lesson, all the teachers got up after they finished their lunch and walked out of the restaurant, while the little girl was crying and telling them not to do so. After she went out after them she was all in tears, and all the teachers laughed their asses off. |
So who is being cruel in this example? |

My Chinese friend summed it up best:
Chinese are very kind to friends; Foreigners are very kind to strangers. |

Mister Buttkins, Asking a Chinaman about his mistress is like asking a homosexual about the number of his sexual partners. They lie. I certainly have no way of knowing how widespread the practice is. I once shared your sentiments regarding the taxi driver and other working people. My companion pointed to a street sweeper in his orange suit and broom and said, "Even he has one" [a mistress].
Most of the Chinese people I know, educated people who speak English well, support the idea that mistresses are not limited to the very rich.
Really, it's not my business. What I object to is the double standard. Priggishness with regard to foreigners, balls to the wall with regard to personal gratification. Kongzi contrasted the people who require a lot of others and little of themselves with those who require much of themselves and little of others.
Of course, the double standards apply to not only these matters. it's the undercurrent of racism that runs through the place.
Locals enjoy imagining FTs as a bunch of horny guys bent on molesting local women. Maybe we are but they are no different. That's my point. |

FYI, the term "chinaman" went out of fashion once more and more people began to accept that racism and ethnic slurs were wrong. Too difficult to say "Asking a Chinese guy" . . . ? |
