Buy a VPN while home. The one I use allows for easy downloading of Y o u t u b e Videos and I use them often for teaching IELTS and business classes. There's a button on the access menu and when you activate it all videos for U Tube are automatically downloaded to a specified folder. Makes it easy. And yes facesmook is fun to play with my home based friends.

Spices - stock up on them from your local supermarket or Dollar store. That $1 jar of basil or oregano costs like $4 here.

I have found that Auchan now stocks many spices from France and the storebrands are cheep.

If you like pancakes bring a quart of REAL maples syrup. Chinese people like pancakes - especially homemade ones.

Same for MAYO - bring a few sqeezys of Hellman's as nothing beats it! TUNA also. If you like some good tuna then bring a 10 or 12 pack from Sams Club of the white meat tuna. Chinese tuna is on par with cat food or Subway tuna.

Depending on your size a QUALITY winter jacket is recommended. Chinese winter jackets are small and often overpriced. Same goes for winter boots. That $20 pair of steel tipped work - hiking boots from Walmart costs more here. And often hard to find in stores.

If you like sneakers things like Nikes are cheaper in the USA.

You might want to invest in a sea container to ship all this stuff over. . .

And you can buy a VPN in-country.

Pretty dramatic stuff. I don't have a VPN, and very rarely even use a proxy to get to what I want online. Not that many sites are blocked (blogger tends to be the one I most often use a web based proxy to access). The big exception is the stuff everyone talks about such Facebook, twitter, youtube. Generally speaking, at least for what I look at online, very little seems blocked.

I would consider one if torrent sites stopped working.

But see, torrent sites are important to you for your various downloading needs. Internet sites that are important for you are no less valid than internet sites that are important for others.

I do miss out on a lot not having access to Facebook. It's the current, modern way to always stay in contact with far away friends. Yes, email of course, but most of my friends and relatives these days would rather do shout outs on Facebook and post pithy updates on their lives than to sit and type out an email every other week. Lazy? To be sure, but that is modern society, no way around it.

Facebook is one place where an non-Chinese speaking person can stay in touch with the rest of the world.

Yeah, that is what I mean. I don't think that a VPN is a must for everyone, and the net is not as bad as some make out, but if there is something that makes your life better and it is blocked, then I would consider buying one so you can continue to access it. For me it would be access to torrents, but if FB is your thing, then better get one.

As someone said, access to something like YT might make your teaching better and give you some great resources, so that is one reason why you might want to invest.

Is winter gear an issue in Guangdong Province? I wouldn't think so.

Note: classroom heat is an issue. You will freeze inside your classes if you are not bundled up. But you will get used to it.

I'm in northern Guangdong and the coldest places are my apartment and the classrooms. Considering that I grew up in the Midwest, I was a bit surprised and unprepared. Anytime we're out and about, a decent hoodie is just fine.

I'm in Fujian. The classrooms are about 62 degrees. I wear a coat in class. My apartment is 64 degrees without the heaters on. No, it's probably not cold like it is in your hometown, but it's still darn chilly here! I expect to be cold outside, but I really hate being cold indoors.

Any size above men's 43 in shoes will be hard to find as I found.

Sneakers - unless large size just buy them here. Place called Outlets. Mainly factory overruns. SO might not be legit, but quality was OK.
