In my town most gyms have a pay as you go option. Surely there are some like that in el DF too? |
Yeah, we call them parks. Plenty of free exercise equipment put in local park areas over the last couple of years. Delegacion properties have free swimming facilities among other installations. Why would you pay to go to a gym? |
It's oh so cool! |

I know I know...socialism does have its merits.
Gyms are pretty pricey here...
You can probably tell I don't hit a gym that often... |

We got a really nice park two years ago--named El parque bicentenario that has a few exercise machines, an really nice playground, 3 basketball courts, a skateboard/bmx bike ramp area. a fiqure 8 jogging trail which is almost entirely shaded by tall pine trees (very important in el tierra del sol) a stage for events, and about 10 class rooms for a variety of art and physical activity classes. There is a small fee for the classes, but you can Zumba for about 10 pesos a session.
It's all new and nice right now, but I am curious as to how those machines are going to hold up after a few more seasons of terrential rains. |

Not just the rains. Over here I've noticed a real tendency to not keep up public areas such as parks. They start off pristine and then over the years they just get run down. I think a combination of people not respecting the area by taking care of it and a lack of long-term commitment from the city are the causes.
Seems one of two things happens after a few years:
1) The area just goes to rot and they build a new park somewhere else.
2) They let the area deteriorate over the years and one day give it a makeover and let it get ruined again and the process is repeated. |

We have a park nearby with newer exercise machines and free Zumba classes 3 or 4 times a week. There are also other free activities at the Delegacion, as well as another park a few minutes away. If you like soccer you can play in one of many leagues for a very reasonable price as well. |

We're pretty lucky in being situated centrally...I have 3 massive parks nearby (Chapultepec, Mexico, and Espana) and another dozen smaller colonia ones. The delegacion takes very good care of the smaller ones with playground equipment being put in about 4 years ago.
The larger parks go back centuries and are well maintained. They are tourist attractions here.
The exerecise machines are a relatively new addition (Ebrard?). Maintenance on the parks is great...we have to wait for the workers to finish cleaning up every day around 2 before my daughter can climb onboard. |

Naw, there's one other. We meet on Tuesdays for the Ebrard Appreciation Association.
By the way, I saw the parkimetros for the first time this week. I thought they would be traditional meters you plug coins into and not the the electronic pay box that it is. |

What would you estimate the cost if of buying per sq meter an apartment in a good centrally located neighborhood? Nice but not luxurious (well maintained but doesn't have to have granite or all the really cool new fixtures, etc).
How much more is HOA, insurance, etc.

The exercise machines were started with Lopez Obrador, and continued with Ebrard (why think of a new idea when you can steal an old, good one). But, to his credit, he did continue to install them. In the park nearest my house (pretty big, takes up 4 square blocks) new ones were installed a few months ago in the second section of the park. This was followed by an increasingly hilarious series of signs from some unknown concerned citizen, regarding what one should do with the products of dog walking. They started out mild and have gotten increasingly hostile. The first one said something along the lines of, when walking your dog, pick up it's poo poo please. The next one was a little stronger, but still funny. I am a tree, not a WC for dogs. Apparently they didn't work as the newest one says "Cabrones, no traguen sus pinches perros aqui a cagar." Wonder what the next one will say.......
Like in Guy's area, the parks here are well maintained, cleaned every other day, and there is always something going on. Zumba classes, knitting groups, concerts, etc. A very pleasant place to sit in the early evening. |

If you're thinking of buying an apartment, I hope you plan to pay in cash. Mortgages are difficult to get here. |

Lunch for two, is it?
I'm not saying Ebrard hasn't done some good things. He has. But I also think he is a vain idiot who is totally out of touch with things that would make the quality of living better for everyone. Sidewalks, for example. I'd trade artificial beaches for sidewalks any day. Even sidewalks in someone else's neighborhood. |

Yes the beaches are a bad idea...he'll never live that down.

It's really hard to nail things down to the square meter as there is so much variety. Age of the building and location would be key factors...lately, they've been building all kinds of new buildings with small 60m2 apartments and charging too much for them - 1.5 million.
Greatly depending on where, you're looking at 500,000 to 2,000,000 pesos for something nice in a central area. |
