To view this from a broader perspective, we could consider the general economic situation. Although there are still huge inequalities (not that that is unique to Russia, as most Brits and Americans will know), there is an expanding middle class. Therefore, there are many Russians with relatively secure, reasonably paid jobs. They can travel abroad (although yes, the visa system is not a helpful one) and as one Siberian told me, he couldn't see the point swapping a reasonably comfortable, reasonably secure livelihood for the chance to become unemployed or exploited labour in the west.

Very interesting topic, I wonder what opportunities the explosion in TEFL numbers gives us teflers who are looking to make more than the usual pittance (exceptions obviously) out of this industry, where and what are the opportunities? Rolling Eyes

I'm not positive and can't prove it definitively but I would say that here in Vietnam qualifications are being enforced. A bachelors degree and some form of teaching certification like Tefl, Celta or even a B.Ed. (lol) are being asked for at even the (formerly) sleaziest places. Inspections are threatened. Fines in the 1 or 2 thousand range for the teacher and suspensions from doing business for a few months for the schools.

I suspect China is about to become backpacker haven soon.

I am hearing that Vietnam is paying real good. And that's entry level.

Just tell everyone that you get $15 an hour and that getting a work permit is impossible.
