KFUPM (not to be confused with PMU)

I realize that was probably a simple typo but since both are in the same region, some clarification is in order, imo.

PMU seems to signal the AVOID-AVOID / WIDE BERTH alert among those who are either very aware or have directly delved into its murky waters prior only to be subsequently washed back ashore.

KFUPM does remain as one of the last remaining bastions of hope in the "academic" "teaching" world of the scholars whom make up this fine and well-studied land.

Scot47 will tell ya' that. And only once if you're lucky.
No offense intended, Scot. Wink

According to their job advert, the salary is 'competitive', but it will be a range depending on qualifications and experience. I would estimate the starting offer to be between 13k-17k, with the upper end for 10+ years related post-MA experience and some time in the ME. There is OT available from what I gather, but I doubt you will have much energy left to do much of it, though as some have stated, the worship of Mammon is rife. If you are single and can work all the OT, and don't need to play too much in Bahrain, you should be good to go.

Bahrain needn't be that expensive. I could easily have a great weekend for a couple of thousand. once a month should be enough vice to keep one ticking over.

Like I said, if you can't handle Saudi, it's probably best not to come, even for a decent gig like KFUPM. One has to focus on mammon or forget it. If you need to date/hook up/socialize with the opposite sex/imbibe on a regular basis, Saudi ain't the place, no matter how close to Bahrain it might be. Just my opinion of course.

And it's a worthwhile opinion. I know MANY who've maintained that 5 star Bahrain lifestyle for decades while "thinking" they're saving money by vacationing in T-land, Phills, etc. and carrying on w/ the same hijinks there.

One particular bloke who has been with the RSAF for 20 years and has no home, no security net, no investments and no savings to speak of....

My reference was to a short span where I was strategically by the bridge, single, younger, a pass for the Navy base and on 20k. What a time...

Now, married and feeling more settled - I've doubled KFUPM's rate (Al-Humdleelah!).

Mammon worship is on HIGH as my earning years continue and the Kingdom feels like less and less of a sure bet. Wink

Yeah.

I only really go to Bahrain for two things, real booze and pig. But having said that:

Visa: 200

Gas: I wouldn't normally factor this in. I don't pay for gas, but even if I did I do a 2000km round trip and it still only costs me 100 for the lot.

Hotel: cheap apartment for 250-300 times 2 for the weekend.

Dining out: not bothered about fine dining, but there are plenty of fast food options on Shabab Avenue or the subway/pasta/chinese at the pump on Awal Avenue. Five meals for 150. Or get some pork from Al Jazeera and cook at home.

Door charge: plenty of places to go for free, why pay?

Booze: admittedly expensive, so buy from the off license at the gulf hotel before you go out. Last time I was there they had 24 bottles for 15BD. Preload is the key. Most beers are 40 SAR now in the bars. Five a night over two nights is 400.

Companionship: I don't partake but I was quoted 300 by someone before. I believe that was cheap, so maybe 500.

Tips:10 SAR to the guy who takes my bags on arrival, that's it.

movie: 30-40 SAR a time

Shopping: for what? You're there to get drunk. Why waste time.

So for all that I make it just over 2000, factoring in drunk both nights, two movies, and one companion.

Works for me.

You could spend a lot more easily, but these days I've been so many times that I know exactly what I want and how to do it.

A 2000km round-trip might have something to do with the frequency of visits too. That's quite a haul indeed. And 200 for the visa is pretty steep. So the costs add up quick. Good thing gas is pretty cheap. But for the fellas at KFUPM, right across from Bahrain, keeping to 2000 SAR a month could be more of a challenge. One really does need to factor this into the cost of living I think because people will want to exit fairly often.

Yeah, it is a long trip for me. It's about 850 km from where I am to Manama. I normally go for three nights to make it worthwhile. I wouldn't go for two.

200 is the price for a single exit so no getting away from that. Some companies will give you so many a year free though.

The price of gas is one of the best things about Saudi. I don't pay for it now, but even when I did, the feeling of filling up your tank for $10 is great.

I normally go with my family so I'll spend a lot more than that. I used my previous post as an example of what a single guy could do.

For sure, if you're over that side, it's a lot of temptation, a lot closer. But having said that, once you find out where the parties are in Saudi it stops becoming so attractive and more like a luxury. I go more for my wife than me.

Big tropical fruit, sounds like you have it made and know the score out there, and how to have a good time also, on a budget.

From Hafr Al Batin it is a 6 hour road trip to Bahrain. In my time there some of the EFL teachers made regular trips to the bars of that island. That is a long way to go for a beer, Some of the teachers who went to Bahrain decided not to come back. Some had great problems in leaving the bars of Bahrain and had to be "collected". The late lamented John P (MOD edit) was one who pulled that trick several times.

Just guessing, but isn't The Big Durian the nickname of Jakarta - much like The Big Apple is for NYC?

It is, just like the big mango is the nickname for Bangkok.

What is the turnover like at KFPMU? I see several posts for employment, is that because the staff size is so large?

Compound? I was told this is compound living including pool, theatre and cafe?

Day-to-Day? What's is the management like? The evaluations etc... The students?

Just odd there seems to be so much turnover and so many comments on here. Of course, I've seen good ones too.

Who knows. You seem to be the only person aware of that particular university's existence. Rolling Eyes

Maybe you should search this forum for KFPMU to see what comments come up. Good luck with that.

Just because a university posts openings doesn't mean there's high turnover. For all you know they could be looking to fill a small number of positions to meet increased enrollment numbers.
