Before this thread is locked, I'll choose Japan or Germany. Any country that can get defeated by most of the world then bounce back to be on top has to be smart.
Oops! Not a choice. Canada, then.

Peligro,

When you began the poll, you might have told us your background and your status as an 11th-grade student. Much of what followed could have been avoided! Wink

Every poll that I've seen on Dave's has been the jumping-off point for discussions, sometimes wide-ranging, sometimes off-topic, and sometimes critical of the poll itself. It's just the nature of these forums.

I remember, a long time ago, there was a thread asking why everyone on this forum were so civil to each other... Smile

It went something like...

"In other internet discussion forums everyone is so keen to jump down each other's throats and criticise - but Dave's is so nice! Why is that?"

It's true, back in the old days people were civil and polite, and more interested in discussing topics of interest and sharing experiences than petty name-calling and personal one-upmanship. What the hell happened to this place?

Anyone remember shmooj, johnslat or Capergirl?

No? Just me then... Crying or Very sad

Yea I remember Capergirl; she was the one who would always be throwing accusations of unprofessionalism at those who didn't share here Cape Breton puritan sexual mores.

I can understand marblez saintly belief that one should be gentle with those that make idiotic postings, and if I could be persuaded it were as much fun as being nasty I might try it out. I can also understand Peligro's really believing that when she produces one of the stupidest questions we have seen in years it is all the fault of those nasty people who point it out to her.

What I can't understand are those that say we should be gentle to her because she is only a Grade eleven/twelve student. Excuse me, but that makes her a seventeen or eighteen year old adult, or near-adult, who has had over ten years of schooling, and yet she stil thinks that you can talk about countries (as opposed to some/all of their inhabiitants, or their consititution, or their government system, or the way they pop popcorn) as being intelligent.

Secondly, there are at least a dozen people who have actually bothered to post an answer. Unless they are people with a grudge against Canada or the US, or from so many online polls have gained a Pavlovian response to any check box, then there must be at least a dozen people on Dave's with an IQ commensurate with that of the poster. How did they find their way out of the airport?

I don't understand how a supposed adult and teacher such as yourself could stoop to the level of insulting and demeaning a student. It this your true character? Or is this how you want to lash out in a classroom but withhold the anger for fear of being fired? If you take so much pride in the teaching profession - then REPRESENT it. Do not shame it by treating students like a scrap of garbage.

Dear marblez

You don't get it. There are no students and teachers on this forum. There are simply posters.

If another twenty year old driver did some incredibly stupid stunt would you decline to honk your horn at him because it would be unprofessional for a future teacher such as yourself to show anger towards a student?

biased? not like your question which was "random" yet had USa, canada, uk, and all the powerful ones!!! and yet gave us no choice!!!!
biased?

Red herring.

So, do you think there is a Life expectancy for a poster on Dave's? Alot of the topics are repeated and so many of the oldies have moved on. Just a few of the skool left.

I have to agree with you that this forum does STINK at the moment. What am I doing here? I can think of only a half dozen posters here whom I truly value their opinions and ideas. A year ago, there were probably 15-20 people. A lot of the good posters have gone. I can't list the names here or I will get into trouble again.

There are a lot of people who just argue for no apparent reason and seem to just like to see their comments on the internet, with nothing of value to add to the discussion.

How sad! Smile The old fogies are lamenting the uncouth "youngsters" spoiling our forum - and harking back to the "good old days". You wouldn't think I'm 24!

I'd give it about a year - I don't post here anywhere near as much as I used to, partly as I'm simply out of ammunition (I've gone through everything - from Altruism to sexism, and Audrey Hepburn to Atheism), and partly because of all these youngsters misbehaving. In the good old days I'd post, like, a monster 3-page OP every day. The replies would also be similarly monstrous. The pattern seems to be moving towards quick 2-3 liners, though I'm not meaning to suggest that one way is necessarily worse than the other...

Still, I remember when I first joined, and there was a different community of old-skoolers (arioch? bnix?) - who also highly resented my newcomer status.

Yeah! Internet discussion forums everywhere are like this - it (apparently) is owing to the inherently impersonal nature of online communication (not usually being able to see or hear the people you are communicating with). I've never been interested in childish bickering, not through a sense of mature self-righteousness, more as it is simply boring and self-defeating. I'd rather discuss a topic of interest than insult people and/or insinuate stupidity. (Although, ironically, in a way this is what I'm doing now...)

Maybe us old-timers should "take the forum back"! Smile

I try to add what I can to this forum, I don't have much to contribute lately because of no school/related work (I volunteer at a crisis line at the moment). Sorry if I get off topic, I just don't like it when people are treated like that. I'm not sure if you guys mean me anyways, but in case. We've got some good discussions going in the North American forum!

Given the Latin phoneme structure of the name you choose, it seemed like a reasonable guess as it also ended in -o.

And I am a student. I am going into grade 12 and come to this forum seeing as I want to be an ESL teacher and am going to University next year. I come here so I can see what routes to take and hopefully know exactly what being an English teacher is like from reading the posts. I'm sorry, but I never knew that the general disscussion forum was only for teachers and about English?

That is the official intention. Like all forums, topics do drift, but starting a topic that is blatantly out is a bit poor form.

I think the response you got is about the same as if you walked into the staff room of the high school across town and shouted out your question. A staff room at coffee break is probably a very good analogy for the atmosphere of these forums actually.

Steady on now! Smile

I know what you mean, some staff rooms can be miserable places. That's one of the reasons I've stayed at my school so long actually - the staff room atmosphere is nice. I imagine if the OP had shouted off her question in my staff room, it would have resulted in some honest if slightly baffled replies..

"Uh.. Dunno? Sweden? Probably Scandinavia or something, they seem pretty on the ball..."

Then the conversation would have drifted onto more important matters, like if the coffee had stewed long enough and if it was colder or hotter than yesterday.

Well, that's how it would've happened if I play the incident in my head...
