Stupid quote function. The following is in reference to where Entrailicus wrote "Define backpackers."
Ok, you're right. I'm guilty of making a sweeping generalization that insults a lot of decent teachers/people who use backpacks.
Maybe 'tourist teachers' would be more appropriate-- those who travel around using teaching as a means to do this, but have no real investment in the profession, and who don't pack their trash out when they go. They don't have any intention of staying abroad once they grow up-- teaching and travelling is just a stop-gap between university and what they consider 'real jobs'. They don't learn the language and they engage in all those behaviors inside and outside work that make the rest of us look bad. You can't really be friends with them because they'll just pick up and leave in 8 months anyway.
This doesn't include some of the excellent, invested teachers I know who just don't really want to settle down anywhere, those kind of professional expats who are great while their here, but I'm still a little sad that they went away. This also doesn't include those who started as backpackers and stayed on to make their careers and lives here.
How to ban them? It'll never happen. I just won't sit at their table at Yeşil Cafe.
Though I suspect as the overall level of English in Turkey improves, the quality of teachers will improve with it... |

| Usually I can do it ok, but lately they've been coming out as something even 31 hasn't achieved, where the quoted part doesn't have a box, and everything I write is in a box. I have no idea how I'm causing this. It won't let me fix it. It's some bass-ackwards quote that I really don't care for, not one bit. |

Having worked in many of the language schools in Istanbul and as a result of having bumped into a wide variety of foreign teachers I feel obliged to question what seems to be the standard mentality of most people on this forum about "backpackers"
In my experience the Bps generally make as good if not better teachers than the socalled "real teachers".
Which is more beneficial for students.
A)A spotty twenty two year old with a degree in Computer science and a dodgy Tefl ie the "real teacher"
B)A traveller who has at least some experience of other cultures and an understanding of the problems associated with language communication
ie the aforementioned "pis backpacker"
Thinking with my students cap on I know which one I'd prefer. The reality of the Tefl circuit is that there are very few teachers who can claim to have a sufficient backround in English to teach it and that the teaching skills necessary for Tefl are generally instinctive. The grammer skills necessary for the job are learnt by most teachers in the classroom and the person with good common sense and people skills will 9 times out of 10 be a better teacher than some boring conceited knowall "real teacher" inspite of having diplomas up the kazu.
Unfortunately on this forum there seems to be an annoying tendency towards elitism. The older teachers seem to have fogotten what it was like when they started out on the Tefl road.
Finally, has anyone else noticed that those who whine the most about Bps are often the ones with the dodgy paperwork. |

This is more what I mean by 'backpacker.' I think we all know what a 'real teacher' is. A backpacker can become a 'real teacher,' and some backpackers are already 'real teachers.' I thought that's what I said in my post.
And I think we have every right to be snotty about the people who come here to 'teach,' leave a wake of trash and insufficient English in their wakes, and make a bad impression of foreign teachers in the process. |

there are two language school associations at the moment ( not sure) and we are not members of them and i find it really silly , some guys come together they try to put the rules and telling each other how they can improve the quality of education...ha ha ha ....

i am the voice of myself and cant speak about people's ideas just to give you a hint , we have been working together for 4,5 years and you know exactly what my opinion is about private industry in teaching.+ i can ask any question to whoever i want. |
