Thanks for the advice - I feel much better now
Dukejob, I'll have to get some tips at some point about music on the 'net - you see I am one of these old fashioned gals who loves to own the CD - I'm only just starting to dip my toes in the waters of internet music. |
There are a few good record / CD shops in Kadiky too.
Dukejob /brissygirl do either of you play bass, my beach boys covers band needs a bass player. |

No, i don't play bass, but i will learn! I hear its easy to learn too. I love the Beach Boys...Pet Sounds is my fav album, i'm bringing it with me on my laptop.
Brissygirl, I used to be like you with the buying of the cds (thats why i have over 1000) The internet is sooo great for music though if you know how to find it. I'll show you a thing or two. When do you arrive in Istanbul? |

Turkey is a good place to be if one does not need to rely on the natives.
Your "contract" is not real unless it is in Turkish, so if they do not keep their free-flowing "word"s, realize that you are not bound in any way.
If you want to be fired, just be rational and candid, and take them at their (published) words. (for example, Bogazici U's Code of Ethics).
These hyper-sensitive, sentimentalist, tribalist Turks will feel so threatened by your operating on a higher plane, by your failure to worship their most important cultural value/idol (don't rock the insecure emotional boat) that they will sack you asap, rather than face their hypocrisy and self-delusion.
Here, the ends justify the means.
Oh, to see the day when Turks' words can be trusted... |

Can't you at least spit out your sour grapes in a more imaginative manner ...
... after all why harp on in a serious tone when all you've got to say is self-agrandizing clap-trap ...
.. Get on that 'higher plane' of yours ... and fly back yo your broom cupboard ... |

it is not true that the contract has to be in Turkish to be "real". it could be in Swahili as long as both parties understand it.
kanattas, I hope you are not in Turkey. I personally like the Turks a lot and enjoy living here.
And Sheikh, you seem to be taking the place of a certain number in making snarky comments. lighten up. The forum has been so much better in the last few months without the massive negativity. |

I'd say kanattas just got fired? And that perhaps s/he feels that it was unwarranted? It's just a guess...
Baba Alex, when you order from Amazon, do you have it sent to Turkey? What are the shipping chrages like? |

They aren't that bad, normally about a fiver. And you save a couple of quid not having to pay tax. I tend to go for the special offers on Amazon, then it makes it worthwhile. |

That's great! I always thought there'd be some huge international shipping fee.
Usually what I do is join one of those stupid music clubs each year before I go home in the summer, you know, buy one get 12 free, then I cancel the membership as soon as I've paid up. I end up paying $4-5 per CD, and I order them to my Oregon address. Last year I signed up my husband too, so there were 26 shiny new CDs waiting for us when we got to the US.
Problem with that, though, is that their selection is pretty top 40, especially for new music... |

Hey there Dukejob
Only just saw your post asking me about my arrival date in Istanbul - for some reason I stopped getting notifications about messages, and my CELTA course (combined with working f/t) has meant that I haven't had much time for checking posts...
Anyway, I'd love to take you up on your offer of musical advice! My arrival date is a bit uncertain at the moment - was going to be in August, but likely to be September now, as I think I need to stick around to see my first niece / nephew born, since I'm planning on being away for quite a bit....
Sorry for rambling post, am v. sleep deprived - I can't wait to be a grown-up CELTA teacher like all of you |

| Recently I discovered that I along with a number of collegues had no ssk payments made on my behalf this only applies to universities .Apparently they can do this this because of a different law so beware everyone going to a uni for the first time ask about this as they won't volunteer it . I have also heard that if you start in any other place they are obliged to provide payments on your behalf I am not sure if those credits are transferrable to a university at a later date ,worth researching I think . |
