Touche almuze!!!

that is exactly what i was trying to get across to these knuckleheads. the bosphorus has natural beauty, that still looks quite good, despite the ugly waterfront development. apart from that, and that is a very minor part of this sprawling metropolis, the city is downright dirty and ugly as hell. just ride the metro for its entirety and anyone can see how horrible this city looks. a simple fact! and no, those other cities mentioned are not as rundown and dirty as istanbul.

Does anyone else like city views.?I was up on the top floor of the Denizbank building in Esentepe the other day- what a fantastic view. I'd love a view like that. My view is the neighbour's net curtains across the road or a bunch of overgrown gardens at the back.

I travel a lot of places in this city and I know the European side pretty well. I have lived in several places too, Belikduzu, Sirinevler, Tarabya, Beyoglu. I have also been in a lot of other big cities in the world. I don't think Istanbul is excessively ugly, though there are places I would not care to live in. But I know a lot of people who would not care to live in Beyoglu. Even in the uglier parts there is green, even if it's plant in a can. As for the dirt, there are streetsweepers out in my neighbourhood every morning, the garbage guys more or less clean up, the storekeepers pick things up and cultivate plants. I see men washing windows often. The air is cleaner than it used to be and so is the Halic. and the tulips were beautiful this year. Obviously this place is not for everyone but many of us here love this place enough to stay.

"yes the waterfront area is nicer, and yes it's for tourists and ships/boats as they approach. plus these people have money, and theyre just a tiny fragment of the population. anyway bebek is pretty ugly when you consider other waterfront areas in other countries - there's plenty of trash in the water, sunken small boat here and there, and the development right up to the water's edge is not pleasant. but where most turks live the city is really horrendous. this is partly cos it is all they can afford; because the suburban councils are corrupt and inefficient; and because turks generally dont take much care of their streets, environment, etc. youve just gotta look at the trash all over the place. the city is for the most part very gray, buildings are piled up on top of one another, the streets are filthy with dirt, esp. taksim. it's a disgrace!!! theyre certainly not gonna win any awards for cleanliness here. and there's no 'green suburb' or decorative part of the city that isnt on show for tourists."


Scb222, I have a feeling that this country is not for you. The word ethnocentric comes to mind. If you cannot see the beauty in the streets of this city, then you are blind, and l pity you. She may have a bit of cellulite here and there, but Istanbul is the most beautiful lady that l have ever had the honor to witness.

Also, regarding the rubbish, Turkey has had a few problems with bombs in the last 30 odd years. The councils had to take away the rubbish bins as they were a favourite place for putting bombs. One small city in Turkey actually had a festival a couple of years ago to mark the return of public rubbish bins. In the years that l have been here, l have seen the return of rubbish bins on the street; in other words, a return to more peaceful times. As for people not caring about their environs, oppression breeds indifference. We all grew up in very different worlds where we were taught that we could stand up and make a difference. In the past, when people stood up here, they were cut down.
Do not judge something you know nothing about, and if you wish to stay ignorant of the countries where you choose to live, then my advice is that you go back home to your fantasy utopia, and wrap yourself up in cotton wool.

Well WE both agree Istanbul is a hell of a city but neither would want to live there ,ok?
