You're right. After a long and dreary winter we could use a vacation seeing some remnants of an ancient culture, but not in a hostile place. Having read some of the stories on Khemerit 440 it doesn't sound so attractive. Madness is one thing, but dangerous is another.

Say it isn't so, Sam.

I agree on that

What i find great is that when a person from another country goes to another country and meets other ppl from different culture ect.

British myself and damn proud of my country and history from British Empire to the ppl who served in the battle of britain, it proved that we shall die before surrender. I wouldnt want to be any other countrymen except british. Even today us brits have a military in the top 4 in the world as the msot deadly and advanced. Unlike most youth today how badly shame do they realsie that they owe their asses to the ppl in those spitfires in 1940 August.

I for one will serve in the RAF if I fail to pass this degree course unless otherwsie it will be TEFL for me in Poland.

I'm so happy for you that you are proud of our great empire. The one that introduced such inventions as the concentration camp, racial segregation by law and a list other things that does include the offing of the local populace at any given time at any given place.

As for owing our asses, I think we have a big thank you owing to the soldiers of the commonwealth especially the Canadians and Indians. Without the Indians we would not have beaten Rommel in the desert and start the liberation of Europe.

As far as our great army, you obviously never have been told of the defeats of the British by the Ashanti, the Afghans and they got their backsides handed to them when they tried to invade Argentina. the surrender at Singapore is probably the most embarrasing military defeat in history.

As for joining the armed forces, if your idea of fun is to be on VCP patrol holding an SA80 with heavy body armour in 90 degrees. The you go for it. Been there done it and wished I listened to my dad when I went to the (in my case) the army careers office.

As for Polish women, if someone wants to go somewhere and meet girls as long as he is in a relationship with another consenting adult then we shouldn't judge should we? the liars and the drop outs always get found out. Go there and enjoy it for what it is if thats what you are after.

MOD EDIT

haha, where did that come from.

Nothing wrong with a little love for your country and past history.

Yes I deff will join the RAF if I fail the degree. Either that or some crappy job like care work or till work.........

So what is it that you regretted about the military, more detail would be nice.

It's a waste of a life. I had no education so I had
no choice and I also came from a part of the country
where all the traditional industires had been shut down
so that made me a perfect candidate, also this was
in the late 1980s.

The army careers office lie to you to get you in. Once
I got to Aldershot I was beastied to the high heavens
running around with a rifle above my head wishing I was
somewhere else. Or guarding the officers mess at 2am
with nothing but a pick axe handle, bored out of my skull.

Being posted to Germany should have been a highlight
but I was posted to a German version of my hometown
and not the palm treed paradise that is shown in the army
careers brochures. Me and my mates got into debt through
too many alcohol ridden nights at the brothel plus running
up huge bills with HP loans and payments that involved us
getting dragged up in front of the CO and getting payments
deducted from our wages.

The rest of it you'll have to wait till my autobiography comes
out Razz

But what I will say is that if you have a choice of the forces
of university then take the better option. If you have to think
of whats the better option you are a perfect candidate for the
army Laughing

ok, thanks for your story. No doubt your story is true. A few of my brothers mates joine dup and soon came running back.

I wont fail uni, its just one of those things you say but you woudlnt do ina million years, not unless I was called up in WW3.

Sorry to hear it turnt out bad for you. How did you get out of it, or did you have to finish your contract?

Answer to your question, I'll certainly finish university and choose TEFL.

I did my time as the song goes and I got out
it didn't go bad but it was just a waste of time
if you can get to university then take that route.

I got into education late on. I can look back on it and
laugh but at the time it was just a useless waste of my
life. I ws just a teengaer when I joined so that helped me
move on.

If you then want to join the services then by all means
go for a short service commision and do it as an officer.

Good luck with your studies.

I always wnated to work overseas and as unexpereinced as I am I looked to the military. Always shown as awe inspiring ect. Anyway I am glad that I came across TEFL. Much better. Anyway military wa sno room for family/travel ect something thats more important to me.

Abit of confession

Im aged 20, start university this sept finish when im 23. I will go to canterbury christ church university to study criminology with pyschology.

I take a 4 week TESOL course in may. I then will go to Poland for 8 weeks to Teach English at summer cmap in Born Sulinowo, near Gdansk in Poland.

Cheers for your advice though.

Heard RAF contracts are 9 years by the way, where british army regular soldier is 2 years.

I never liked the idea of contracts.

They aren't, particularly. And not forced to do anything against their wishes.

interesting views on the military here. I would say for one that don't join any force unless your mentally right to pick it up and use it when told/its necessary. Some people see everything else in the job - fun, training, travelling, etc but it comes as a shock when they're told to use a weapon in force.

For me joining the RAF on a comission was the only thing I wanted to do and I can tell you now it's a hell of a lot harder to join the forces then even 2/3 years ago never mind the 80's. With a decreasing overall number of troops required the armed force career centres are the first major hurdle you'll come across and they'll weed out those that try to join the forces 'cos its the only thing left. The qualifications you now need as well and the mental fortitude you now need to become infantry let alone join on a comission is astonishing

If you're lucky enough Paul, to get to your 3 day assessment at Cranwell you'll quickly find out the level that's required (not saying you won't get there just letting you know the facts). The aptitude tests are a test of patience and character and the interview will be hardest you'll ever have to sit. Then when you've passed that - the bleep test, and no matter what they say nothing short of level 10 is acceptable (I was lucky/unlucky enough never to get that far).

As regards moaning about being in the army, its the same about as moaning in any job only more intense - like you may get killed. But then, you'd think about that before joining. Won't you?

The length of contract for non-aircrew will be 6years or 16. For pilot/nav it's a minimum of 9. I think the army is 3yrs, my knowledge is a year or two out of date.
