As I said it's not final, pending references etc...............but if all that comes through then it'll be Al-Ain.............suits me far better than the bright lights of Dubai and I've had some positive feedback about the town from a few contacts I've made on the net.
Please don't treat this as an open invitation for mud slinging at HCT Al-Ain, I'm satisfied with the set up and to be honest however it pans out it'll be a lot better than where I'm currently stationed (I'd rather keep that a secret)...............I know what to expect.
Having said that I've been extremely unlucky with jobs falling through for various reasons at the last minute.............so don't count your chickens etc.
I'm not called Bin Shafted for nothing |

| Bin--well, Al Ain it is then; good luck. I will say nothing of the college there. I was at Dubai Women's and I really liked Dubai as far as the Middle East goes. My Malaysian-Chinese wife and I found our own amusements in Dubai; no need to follow the western expats to the boring noisy pubs, but it was nice to be in such a cosmopolitan place. I did not like Al Ain at all the few times I visited. Well, now I'm in Ras al Khaimah, a similar place in some ways, though half of it's an ugly mess, but at least it's only 45 min. from Dubai. |

I've got two little uns in tow and from the feedback I've received about Al-Ain I'm happy that it is a family orientated backwater.
I won't ask why you didn't like Al-Ain, different strokes etc, I'll take it as I see it................but as you say there's a straight road to Dubai and Abu Dhabi should I feel the need of a weekend for a bit of harramity.
How easy is it to get in and out of UAE to Oman for a weekend visit?
Is GCC residence enough or are there multiple exit/re-entry visa issues.
I'm taking this thread on a bit of a tangent, maybe I should reserve these questions for HCT HR.
I've got half the family poised to come over for a visit, is it easy to get my relos and the wife's parents over or is that another paper-chase in the waiting?
This thread is going on and on, magic, 'it's a saga now' ................. maybe we can beat the Dave's record for 'length of thread'
Perhaps it's time to open a new thread...........'what's the price of a beer in Al-Ain (discuss)

It gets better and better....................sounds like fun, the wife is salivating at the prospect........
I've been signed up to that site since September and have built up a strong base of contacts.
I'm well informed, I know what to expect and only wish that I had been so well perpared and informed before I'd made the many ill-informed decisions I had made before taking up previous positions in the Middle East..............
I was thrown out of college for cheating on the metaphysics exam;
I looked into the soul of the boy sitting next to me. |

Just a wee thought, as the dark clouds of pessimism loom heavily on the horizon.........................I have yet to get the final nod from HCT.
Seems that the Vice Chancellor has the final say and as yet he/she is saying nothing. I've been told that this is a mere rubber stamp but I'm not so sure about that now as it seems to be taking an eternity to get the final word.............are they stalling on giving me the bad news?
Always the pessimist I just wonder if anyone out there has been in this situation, or knows of someone who has.
Have you been rejected at the last hurdle?
Is this likely?
I've been pestering HCT for some kind of an indication of the final outcome and they have told me it is now in the hands of the VC.
If you are dropped at this stage do you remain in the pool or do you have to reapply?
Hopefully I'm worrying about nothing but I have a gut feeling (usually right) that I'm not getting invited to this party.
I know I'm not the only one in this position.
Its been such a long wait and frustration has long since set in.
Put the champagne on ice for now.don't count your chickens and all that |

It won't be the VC that nixes you... unless you have done something to him personally in the past.
Assuming that like most of us, you would never have met the fellow, there is one last hurdle to pass and that is the security check. I do know people who failed this last test and HCT backed out. Again I will assume that you don't have any major skeletons in your past that could come out to bite you. (to mix up a few more sayings in our rapidly burgeoning pile)
These places are notoriously slow at completing paperwork, so keep the champagne chilled, but don't pull that cork out yet...

Still not home and dry yet.
Heard from a little bird that someone at the VC stage has just been rejected...............case of counting the chickens before they hatched.
The silver lining on that cloud is losing it's sheen.
There are no skeletons in my cupboard but then again I've always been a bit of a black sheep.
There's many a slip betwix application and offer.........
Nuff sayings/cliches for now I think. |
