While I agree that Brit food can hardly be described as 'world renowned', I do think British cuisine has come on heaps in the last 10-15 years.
'Toad in the Hole' is a splendidly figurative name, which basically means sausages in batter. The trick is to get the right sausages and have the right recipe for the batter. 'Beef Wellington' is a whole filet of beef coated in forest mushrooms and then wrapped in puff pastry.........truly delicious with a mushroom gravy and sauteed potatoes.
Back to Polish food though. Have you noticed how much mayo they squirt on kebabs, fries and burgers? They put the Belgians to shame. Actually I remember being a 15 year old living in Belgium and ordering a dish called 'Filet Americain'. There was me expecting a giant T-bone when a tiny dish was presented to me with half a pound of raw mince, a raw egg and some Worcester Sauce.....gutted. It's like when they ask you if you want 'sos' on a steak in Poland...you generally get half a cupfull of animal fat:(
I'll be in Poznan again in 2 weeks.......can't wait.
BTW Scottie.....I don't diss Americans, I like them, they're like us but they don't buy rounds........gotta like them....... they follow all the great British traditions of democracy, civil society and jurisprudence. I suppose imitation is the greatest form of flattery. They also make us look really cool when we drink with them in Polska:)) You know how pretty women always hang a round with one minging friend. ) |

Not true sir!
British food is by far the best in the world and, if anything, has got worse over the last few decades.
For those who don't know, let me explain...
As everyone is aware, Britain has a fair amount of rain and a temperate climate (The best climate in the world, but that is another story). This produces lush vegetation and healthy livestock. The natural abundance of delicious meat and greenery was the envy of the civilised world for centuries. Fact.
Other cultures, to their credit, compensated for this by producing fancy sauces to cover the unpleasant taste of the meat, pastas to make up for the lack of bread making facilities, importing spices etc. Fact.
As Britain stood still, the rest of the world revolutionised its food because of necessity resulting in funny shaped pastas, chemical tasting sauces, eating frogs and spicy lard (Smalec) .
The end result is Britain being a victim of its own success and a strange irony occurs, we have the worst reputation for food because we have the best food. Simple really.
Tell this to your befuddled students as the topic of British food comes up and watch the smiles drain away from their moronic faces.
Don't get me started on driving on the left (The correct side). |

As an American, I wouldn't say driving on the left is the correct side. I'd say it's the right side. Wait. Driving on the left is right? Now I'm confused. |

What a load of Yorkshire pig's baloney you just excreted! In Rule Britannia there is no clear-cut separation of powers between the executive and legislative branches. In the US we proudly enjoy the checks and balances system. "We the People" hold cultural and political hegemony.
Don't get me started with your Rump Parliament and Victorian traditions... |

You're right........then you go mess it all up with rigged elections, a shady executive and a legislature corrupted by big business. I don't think 'we the people' had much of a say on the Iraq debacle and if you read 'Fiasco' a current bestseller about the war...nor did the 'informed' generals; Franks was a disaster at Centcom. |

Sorry Will , there's no such thing as a 'Brit'. A Briton yes, but that's pushing the limits of vagueness, and not nearly as loutishly proud as 'Brit'!
Face it, you're a Briton |

rigged elections stem from the absolute basis of how presidents get elected in America, i trust you're not just talking about GWB. it's not just who has money, but the system itself. anyone that has taken some time to study The Electoral College can clearly see it's absolutely rigged. virtually nobody in America understands this, mainly because everyone still thinks it's 1955 and nothing can hurt their economy, jobs or overall standard of living.
with that said, "we the people" did have alot to do with the Iraq War. sure the voting system is a joke, but there were still millions of American citizens pulling the handle in the voting booth for Bush.......TWICE.
unfortunately, it was a simple case of propaganda finely executed (American government knows that when it wants to get something done, as a last resort, they will always win by strumming the country's notoriously strong patriotic strings), along with a strong republican presence in the Senate and House (the Dem's only recently started filling more spots).
besides biff, contrary to popular belief, alot of Americans hate the Iraq War. we don't need to read a book to tell us why either (not to discredit reading about it, I for one find literature on this topic very very interesting and informative). it's just that the right people in the right places wanted and still want the war, and they conjured up enough votes to achieve it.

I flat out don't agree with England's direct connection of church and state, but I'll be the first one to say that in America, although we have this seperation clearly stated in our doctrines.......it's only words. look around, the US government is overrun by church nuts, psycho neo-conservative born agains, hard core Evangelicals......but i don't want to stir the religious pot. we're in Poland, after all . |

As far as I'm concerned, Iraq'a real tragedy and it wasn't worth 1 American/allied life. East and west are contradictions. The east has Islam, which is in itself a system of unquestionnable rules while the west has democracy and choice. I don't just read books about it, my dad was a Naval Airwarfare Instructor like the Topgun dudes, my brother-in-law was in the Gulf in 91 and 2003 as a Royal Marine and my brother was in a cavalry regiment.
Anyway, it's gone way off topic. Brits like Americans but we're used to ethnic pish taking in the UK in a way that Americans aren't. I think Big Cannon would get a slap if I met him though. |
