My experience with the place is that they fire excellent instructors with good attitudes and reasonable expectations, for no particular reason. You'll be working with drunks, sexual weirdos, a megalomaniac director and co-workers who I would not allow to sit on my front porch. It is a humiliating and unhealthy place to work.

You can't look at Vinnell as a serious teaching "job"....it's an "experience" more'n anything else. That's what I mean by the "right attitude". The least important qualification you need is to be an enthusiastic, excellent instructor. If you are and you can't adapt, you won't last.

(By the way, the same goes for a lot of inner-city school districts in the USA, as I'm sure you're aware. What goes on at Vinnell is a long way from being "unique" The drop-out rate among new teachers in some US school districts surpasses Vinnel's drop-out rate exponentially).

Granted, that's how I went to Vinnell in my day, all enthusiastic and so on. But it took me like 2 weeks to realize what I was into and adapt I did. "Teaching" skidded waaaay down the totem pole and it became only "the money" that was important. It was easy for me to switch.....and back again when my next job was heavily "academic". Switcheroo.....no problem.

Remember: if you can't beat 'em, join 'em.

So add it up:

--Teaching ability counts for nothing.
--Money is the only possible reason to take a job there.
--The "right attitude" in this case means your ability to slurp up the slime like lemonade.
--The Drop-out rate is north of 50% per-contract. They are always hiring because they are always firing.

Oh, and then there is also a bad side to the job as well....

I kid you not.
