Hi,
I know this an old post, but it's a goody! I'm going to apply to be an examiner, and it's been really interesting reading what you guys have said. A friend of mine thinks it's the best job ever, but then again I'm a bit sceptical. So thanks for the realistic posts from all that have gone before.

What I want to know (from someone apart from my friend) is, does anyone know what's happened regarding the tax situation? Is the pay still the same as when the thread started?

In other words, what's changed since January?

Cheers

Alan

BC still claims you are liable for your own taxes. And your own work visa.

not that i don't know the ielts examiners' gig but that "own work visa" is quite interesting. just imagine the conflicts of interests there and that with all due respect to all. how could this kinda system have been established Rolling Eyes
by the way, i believe the examiners' moderators work hard enough to either moderate or not as well as they pay attention to those chinese ids

i don't know how much this is related to the examiners training, but i have a guestion. how much does the chinese government oversee ielts in china?

cheers and beers to ielts

By liable for your own work visa I mean that the BC will not obtain one for you. You cannot obtain one on your own based on being an IELTS examiner and if you have one from another full-time job, it is still illegal unless your employer specifically allows you to work also for the BC.

The government doesn't oversee IELTS, but they get their cut. All IELTS testing centers must be a JV with a local government determined educational facility (college or university) and all support staff except for, obviously, examiners and the normal BC employees must be hired by the Chinese partner.

those with such work permits must've been enjoying some fine pro relationships. well, it's got to be tough for examiners to keep their integrity and jobs. just an observation.

by the way, who decides what students should have their exams where? i mean who does the scheduling of students/examninees?

cheers and beers to holidays that i've been enjoying so much Very Happy

I am sure Joe can correct me, I believe the rule is that you can't work for a place like GAC that has many students testing for IELTS, and still be an IELTS examiners, though I believe teaching at a uni and being an IELTS examiner is fine

Until the police decide there is some political issue that will be resolved with the UK by screwing over examiners.

Examinee scheduling is done online by the NEAA. It's rather simple: first come, first served.

Examination dates are controlled entirely by the BC.

To be honest, most examiners do not keep their integrity. But they hide it well.

You are right. It is not allowed to teach, tutor or work in any manner related to IELTS outside of the BC. Many, however, do tutor on the side and the BC never finds out.

Personally I think the importance of the IELTS test is going to go down. If a program like GAC can develop and maintain standards, Any uni would prefer this over a one shot test score.
The new from London education bureau (see the students expelled thread) was that students wanting to study in the U.K. would need to have a "Proven track record" of education ... whether financial demands will make them acept just a test score in the future remains to be seen

Education in the UK being a cash cow, I seriously doubt they will change the status quo to make it more difficult for Chinese people to study there.

Most of these people, if not all, are either former IELTS examiners or Photoshop IELTS examiners.

That said, the BC does provide some limited public information seminars where IELTS examiners are brought in to give a brief overview of the examination.
