Ah, there's no place like home - which, come to think on it, is probably one of the big reasons most of us became EFLers in the first place.

In my case something went left...so far left I ended up in Asia.

Must have been that wrong turn I took at Albuquerque.

Dear doner,

OK, OK - I sincerely apologize for having had a pretty wonderful time and being able to have saved enough money so as not to have to worry about my "sunset" years during my EFL "career."

Mea culpa

"back to AA again"

Never left.

Regards,
John

Dear doner,

Actually, I didn't join AA until 2002, one year before I left Saudi for good (Yes, I know - EVERYONE leaves Saudi for GOOD.)

What made it a pretty wonderful time? A very satisfying job with decent students, some great colleagues, and an administration that left me alone to do my job.
In my off-time, while in-country, I took trips around the Kingdom. But for the most part, being blessed by not needing a lot of outside diversion and having a great love of reading, I occupied myself by doing that a lot. Once the internet came in, that gave me another pleasant occupation.

As Pascal commented - "All of man's miseries stem from his inability to sit quietly in a room alone."

Fortunately, that's one inability that I don't have.

Regards,
John

Dear doner,

Nope, they were right for them, just like I'm right for me. Everybody's different. But I know quite a few ex-colleagues at the IPA who would agree with me.

Regards,
John

Takes all kinds to make a world.

Don't give John a hard time about having had a nice life, and found a place he liked. We should all be so lucky.

If you're happy on your own, your guaranteed a lot of good company.

Best,

Justin

Dear doner,

More appropriately - my own head was/is a place I like.

"Stone walls do not a prison make,
Nor iron bars a cage;
Minds innocent and quiet take
hat for an hermitage;
If I have freedom in my love,
And in my soul am free,
Angels alone that soar above
Enjoy such liberty."

Unhappy people will, in my experience be unhappy anywhere; ones that are content will be content anywhere.

Regards,
John
