Yawn... VS
(the usual English teacher rants... no no... it can't be different from what I have been teaching all these years... it's going the way of thee and thou, if not gone already... sorry boys, but so it goes in the real world... come on back anytime... try not to cringe too often when you hear the natives here speaking their lingo... I been listnin' now for a few years and it is often pathetic...) |
Who said anything about teaching? We're talking about a word that is still in use in American English.
What is pathetic is people who cannot admit they are wrong.
Fact - the word shall has not been "completely dropped". Type shall in any search field of CNN, ABC, Fox.. and you'll see it is being used tens of thousands of times a day.
Not "completely dropped".
Not "gone already". Still here.
Yawn again, and admit you are wrong. |

Gosh reading this thread lightened my day.
Now, here's a point from way back. VS said

| You notice that we don't have any accent marks on our keyboards. |
In the UK the accent marks are not on the standard keyboard either but you can find them easily when wordprocessing. And in the days when I used a typewriter I used to go back and put accents in by hand. Does this mean that in the US you all ALWAYS write cafe, not caf? That the ubiquitous brand is called Nescafe, not Nescaf? |

| It seems to be optional in the U.S. You will see both cafe and caf in the U.S. I have ready access to the accent mark on my HP keyboard by hitting the single quotation mark before the letter it stresses. Most people type "resume" for the CV document but I find it slightly jarring because my mind first goes to the verb ("Shall we resume deliberations?") for an instant before settling on the noun it denotes. So I type "My rsum is attached." |
