| We are mortal and know it, it is true. But think of all our immortal and selfish genes that we get to pass on to the next generation of TEFLers! Isn't that uplifting? I wonder what course book they'll be using then....? |

Yes. I know. Don't TEFLers procreate? Usually with other teachers, or even students too, I think. Granted, it can be touch and go on the financial front if starting a family when in the world of TEFL. But think of the baby TEFLers running around, soon to be teaching the masses in the future!
Could be a great TV series: 'Star TEFL - The Next Generation' |

Exactly. Money in TEFL is BAD for propagating DNA.... |

Yes, but how many other jobs are there about which we could say the same? Labouring peons, doing back-breaking agricultural work, may or may not break even economically, but have you noticed the size of their families? Masses of DNA being propagated.
And if EFL becomes too much of a drag, a bit of 'ow's yer father never went astray, hence many a next-gen baby TEFLer. Regardless of the cost.
Beats lesson-planning! |

Mate...EPSO...it's a long shot but it could be the key to the future. A mate of mine had just finished his law degree in London and applied to one of the jobs via the concours, boom! A few tests and months later he was at the gravy train job he is now living the good life...chances are not substantial and he is a man who has always had luck but hell...could be there...that's the dream. Starting salary at 80k a year, two hour lunch breaks, 8 weeks holiday a year, every Friday off early and up to 14 years sabatical with increasing salary the longer you are there and all you need for it is decent French, German and a law degree...just an example. |

Ah, but where's the idealism? Where are the eager young enquiring student minds? How do we get to 'touch the future'? Selling your soul to the Euro gravy-train? What profiteth a man if he gains the whole world and loses his own soul?
I'll have to remain true to my Headway! |

Dear Sashadroogie,
"What profiteth a man if he gains the whole world and loses his own soul?"
Ah, but you have the soul of a teacher. Others have the souls of, say, lawyers or business people.
The trick is to do well and do good at the same time.
Regards,
John |

We have no soul; we are just carbon based life forms so no worries about that. |

Dear John
That's the kindest thing that has been said of me and to me on this forum all week. Thank you.
I think I feel a tear welling up. It must be Russian soul. Oh, you'll all just have to excuse me while I go off for a weep...

Next time you use Early Modern English verb conjugations, you better bloody well remain consistent! and not mix them up! |

Dear Deicide,
"We have no soul; we are just carbon based life forms so no worries about that."
I'd be wary of making such a definitive statement about something that can't be proved or disproved.
Atheists have to be believers as much as believers do.
But if the word "soul" bothers you, how about "spirit?"
Regards,
John |

In the same sentence with two third person singulars you use the modern ending -s and just prior -th...consistency is the key! |

As Daniel Dennet said, we have 'souls' they're just made of lots of mechanical robots! |
