My latest tidbit from the UAE rumor mill - heard from two sources, one in RAK and one in Al-Ain - is that HCT management is starting to hyperventilate over the fact that they not only don't have the space for the hundreds of new students said to be landing on their doorstep in September... there is no budget or hiring process begun for the dozens of new teachers required... nor do some of the smaller Emirates have the housing available.

VS

Interesting. You ought to start a new thread with this.

We were informed by someone in upper management that this change is highly unlikely to occur in September. Not sure how much of a rumour it was, but he seemed pretty sure of what he was saying.

I've heard the following:
1) Zayed U is on very solid ground, and in fact is getting a lot of money thrown at it for the foundations program etc. Zayed is apparently now the Sheikh's favorite little baby. The newest campus out in Abu Dhabi will be graced with a complete shopping mall for the gals. Anyone game to try drag their students out of the dress shops to get them to class on time??
2) There will still be students accepted at UGRU in September, so if they start then, that will be at least another 2 years before UGRU can close. It's apparently Sept 2011 when UGRU will shut its doors to new students. As for the far-flung Emirates, where students are supposed to be at HCT's instead of UGRU, who knows.
3) HCT is getting smacked around the chops in all directions because of the lack of accreditation going on ("Me Want University, not scummy College, why you no University yet!" said in that dreadful monotone of his-sheikhness-in-charge). Falling out of favor with his-monotone-ness might mean budget and staffing cuts, so managers are starting to get worried. The rumour of an unpaid multi-million dirham power bill at one HCT leading to constructions being stalled is a very strong one.

4) In summary, the only certainty is that there IS no certainty. Until something actually happens, rumor and speculation are all that you are going to see on this board and hear on the streets. But isn't it fun??

I don't have "truth" in my dictionary? I don't know what you're talking about. It's not a consensus on these boards that I make things up or only forward rumors.

Dear Sheik,

"It's not a consensus on these boards that I make things up or only forward rumors."

You're absolutely right - however, I HAVE heard a rumor . . . . .

Regards,
John

I know there's nothing to say
Someone has taken my place
When times go bad
When times go rough
Won't you lay me down in tall grass
And let me do my stuff

I know I got nothin' on you
I know there's nothing to do
When times go bad
And you can't get enough
Won't you lay me down in the tall grass
And let me do my stuff

Down down down down de do down
Down down down down de do down
Down down down down de do down
Down down de do de it do
Down down down down de do down
Down down down down de do down
Down down down down de do down
Down down

One thing I think you should know
I ain't gonna miss you when you go
Been down so long
I've been tossed around enough
Oh, couldn't you just
Let me go down and do my stuff

I know you're hopin' to find
Someone who's gonna give you peace of mind
When times go bad
When times go rough
Won't you lay me down in the tall grass
And let me do my stuff

Down down down down de do down
Down down down down de do down
Down down down down de do down
Down down de do de it do
Down down down down de do down
Down down down down de do down
Down down down down de do down
Down down

Do it, do it, do it!

Down down down down de do down
Down down down down de do down
Down down down down de do down
Down down de do de it do
Down down down down de do down
Down down down down de do down
Down down down down de do down
Down down

I'm just second hand news
I'm just second hand news
Yeaaaah!
I'm just second hand news
I'm just second hand news
Yeaaaah!
I'm just second hand news
I'm just second hand news
Yeaaaah!
I'm just second hand news
I'm just second hand news
Yeaaaah!
Yeaaah!

Now get this, what I have heard from a very well high placed source in what will be the former ministry of ed is that all schools and colleges for locals will be reassigned as Schools for Higher Optimal Person Placement In Groups centres with formal education being given to only those sent overseas to develop during their formative years in overpriced and over-hyped institutions, similar to those in Academic City to develop a baggy hip hop look, bad haircuts and silly accents.

In the meantime all institutions involved in the development of numeracy, literacy and critical skills and the attainment of an IELTS 4.5 will be put on hold until the money runs out and the local workforce have to do something for themselves.

The phrase
Quote:
former ministry of ed
caught my eye ----

Most of the Ministry of Health has been out-sourced and commercialized ---- wonder if that was the idea behind the Minister swap that occured a couple of years ago. (I admired Dr. Hanif - but his job was impossible).

From what I've seen, the emphasis in the UAE has been more on business development - not human development.

Hello uaeobserver: Of course they can emphasize 'business development'....they've got millions of 'Little Indians' and spineless Englishmen to make up for the lack of 'human development'....
