What do you mean? Any placements that are made around now are at picky BOEs where previous ALTs were just fired. It could be Tokyo, Osaka or anywhere. |
I don't know about Osaka, but it's very, very difficult to get a Tokyo position unless you've been in Japan for awhile. It's also one of the worst branches to work for unless you're lucky enough to get one of the few great positions (which most people won't give up).
Your other option is going in as an intern, which Tokyo branch has a good amount of and requires no previous experience. I wouldn't really recommend it, though. |

|
|
Hello All,
So I received an email announcing i'll have a level check of may japanese.. I've never taken any classes or anything but i've learned much from friends, reading, ex's and so forth.. I was just curious if anyone has taken the interview before and could perhaps give a general idea of what they cover.
Also, at this stage in the game does this mean I can end up somewhere extremely rural or as I hope somewhere in the kanto area.
Thanks in advance!

| If its the same as when I took it, (last July) its a phone call interview. They ask you a few basic questions and some intermediate ish ones. Nothing too fancy. Sorry I can't remember the exact questions. |

They'll check whatever level you put down. If you were modest and put conversational level or whatever, it'll just be a few basic questions, maybe the most difficult ones asking you why you want to do your job and ambitions for the future, etc. Just giving simple answers will be fine for those. If you said that you had a high level, then you'll be getting more detailed and complicated questions, such as how to deal with classroom situations and what skills you can bring to the schools, along with being expected to be able to hold a discussion.
Really, as long as you were honest in your application, then you'll be fine. I can't imagine having poor Japanese being too much of a negative (mainly used in considerations with placements and overall candidate ability), unless you were an idiot and put a high level of Japanese down when you can barely string a sentence together. |
