Well Prof. Dr.Dr. you have asked us to believe many things, being Caucasian is just one of the many things that don't ring true, why bother to tell us such a thing in the first place, do you think it is important? No I will stick to my guns, given time you will as us for our bank account numbers so you can deposit your dead fathers millions. Shame on you other posters you might have frightened Prof. Dr.Dr. off, I hope not. Let us be nice to him.

Thanks VS, I stand corrected. I did think the "B.Sc." was strictly British nomenclature. When I left the student world it was only "B.S." in the U.S.

You're not THAT much younger than me!! Laughing I wonder if it is a matter of the choice of particular colleges/universities... or part of the country.

Anyone considering pursuing a contract with KAU should ask to work with a Turkish Canadian working there.

While I didn't sign with KAU I found this man answered all my questions and was very approachable as a point person for the organization.

I realize that may not mean much but KAU seemed like a decent organization.

However, if you got a public teaching credential then the American International School

is a much better gig b/c they provide compound housing in Jeddah which is priceless.

Dear redsnapper,

Unless I miss my guess, that "Turkish/Canadian" is a regular poster on this forum.

Regards,

It all still begs the question... why would this paragon of world education... with all his supposedly fancy degrees... want to teach ESL at a third rate university in a country like Saudi Arabia. That isn't a sabbatical, this is masochism...

In my experience, people with "outstanding" credentials who constantly need to be recognized for those credentials will be MISERABLE working in the Gulf. No matter how extraordinary your credentials, no matter what your reason for being there, you will be treated as just another cog in the wheel. Someone with a simple BA and a CELTA would probably be able to relate better to the low-level students one usually encounters in these jobs. A highly credentialed person who feels the need to display his academic superiority and have his ego stroked constantly will not sit well with the students. Can you say, "Next plane out"?

Before I do so, however, allow me to explain--that I am a caucasian American, that I have my MD, as well as three doctorates, including one in second-language acquisition, and a second in composition and TESOL for Univeristy-bound students. I have my TSL with 1000 hours of teaching experience to back it up, have my various teaching certificates, have taught in university settings as a professor for some 30 years (I am almost 50), and of these years, a good twenty are in international programs at some of the finest universities in the world, I have authored (not edited) 5 major texts in our field, published with major international publishing houses, and I have a minimum of 150 articles and chapters in books. To this, I presented 3 international teaching awards, 3 prestigious fellows, I also provided three extensively documented and supported recommendations.

first off I smell BS. An MD and 3 doctorates, books and awards? Why you changing jobs? this aside: can you actually TEACH ESL? because KAU wants teachers first and foremost. i suspect you may be a great technician and debater of the subtle nuances of the english language but can you convey this knowledge efficiently?

BTW, did you bother to renegotiate the contract terms? I was offered a measly sum from my present employer. I refused the offer and suggested 12,000 dollars more per year and they accepted.

Read this thread with mounting interest, don't have any of the creds of one poster who doesn't need any more publicity, it seems the less you have, the better off you are! By this I mean, you have less academic and emotional baggage and lower and more realistic expectations! I only have half the time teaching experience he has and I'm nearly a decade older, boy he must be a super nerd!

rattling off his resume to impress people means he likely lacks the interpersonal skills one learns as a child. his childhood was shortened by delving into academia at too young of an age. I don't think he has much teaching experience in ESL and that is why they likely gave him such a bad offer. experience means more than degrees, periodicals and awards really.

Thankfully not... but you do have to deal with all kinds in Gulf education and they carry a variety of passports from English speaking countries.

Hi, I have read this thread and a number of others on the subject of KAU. I'm may be interviewing for them soon. I would really appreciate it if anyone has information on the current situation there.

I know there have been negative postings, but I believe there have also been some changes. I'd like to find out what things are like right now.

Thank you so much for your help.

I gather that a direct hire is much better than going through a recruiter. The problem, often times you only hear back from the recruiters and not the University itself.

Does anyone have any advice on how to get hired directly from KAU?

Thank you for any information you can provide.

I would also like to ask if anyone who currently works for KAU could shed some light on the current working conditions. I was told that things have changed for the better.

Thank you.
